Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach

$$$ | 100 Coronado Dr., Clearwater Beach, FL, 33767, USA

This resort near Pier 60 guarantees sweeping views of the Gulf or the Intracoastal Waterway from the balcony of your room. Guest quarters are decorated in a clean, modern style; those with bunk beds are great for families, though the hotel offers no organized kids programs. If the beach is too crowded or the Gulf is too warm, you can head for the large pool, which is shared by residents of the condos in the hotel's twin building on the same property. The restaurant, Ocean Hai, is probably the only place for miles where you'll find Asian-fusion cuisine. The large, full-service spa and the fitness center will keep adults occupied.

Pros

  • Excellent water views
  • Good accommodations for families
  • Fresh, beach-chic styling throughout

Cons

  • Residential building on property
  • Lots of beach traffic
  • Busy with events and meetings

Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort

$$$$ | 1 King Cotton Rd., Charleston, SC, 29438, USA

If you're looking for amenities in a get-away-from-it-all escape, the island's only resort has both. These 250 time-share units can be rented out with a two-day minimum stay. Summers are solidly booked, especially the weekends. Although none of the accommodations sit on the beach, most are just a short walk away, and there are three swimming pools within the resort (four, including the indoor pool). The family-oriented recreation staff knows how to keep kids amused with everything from painting classes to organized nocturnal turtle-watches. There are also Lowcountry shrimp boils and nature walks, but the primary activity here is enjoying the island's golf complex. (There’s even a mini-golf course on-site.) A tram transports you to the resort's beachfront cabana, which is delightful and stocks plenty of chaises.

Pros

  • Great choice for golfers
  • Wonderful beach cabana
  • Atmosphere is laid-back and unpretentious

Cons

  • No daily housekeeping services
  • Hard to book at peak times
  • Many units are atop two to three flights of stairs

Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District

$$ | 400 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA, 19106, USA

This eight-story hotel sits within what is billed as the country's \"most historic square mile,\" and it's a block and a half from Old City's major historical attractions, including the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. It's also an easy walk to many restaurants, bars, and shops. The front desk staff is known to be friendly, but rooms are basic and showing some wear and tear. The outdoor rooftop pool, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is a lovely place to relax and escape the summer heat. Popular with big groups, it's not unusual to see a tour bus parked outside.

Pros

  • Convenient and walkable location

Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront

$$ | 57th St. at Oceanfront, Virginia Beach, VA, 23451, USA

Away from the boardwalk, the hotel feels like a quiet getaway—rooms that do not face the ocean directly have either a partial view or overlook the swimming pool. The modern lobby has a skylighted atrium. The Surf Club Ocean Grill serves—predictably—seafood. Tuesday nights are great for kids with movie-night big-screen TVs outside by the beach.

Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center

$ | 2033 Sidney Baker St., Kerrville, TX, 78028, USA

Even though you're on one of the bustling main streets of Kerrville, a stay here is a little like a retreat to a star 1950s dude ranch. No, there aren't horses or hayrides, but the rooms are all decorated in a Western theme, with exposed limestone walls and old-fashioned fixtures and curtains. Almost every room has a set of mounted deer antlers, just in case you were beginning to forget you were in Texas. The main lobby flaunts the Lone Star State's attributes as well: it displays more than 40 full mounts of exotic game along the high limestone walls and a life-sized sculpture of a cowboy on a bucking bronco. A special family suite includes a separate room for kids, with bunk beds.

Pros

  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Good for "old-fashioned" Texas feel
  • Affordable rooms

Cons

  • Entire property could use some updating and remodeling
  • Limited restaurant hours
  • Room decor is sparse and drab

Yellowstone Valley Lodge

$$$$ | 3840 Hwy. 89 S, Livingston, MT, 59047, USA
Offering more of a well-appointed practical base than an exclusive luxury lodge experience, these comfortable cabins are about 16 miles south of Livingston and about 40 minutes north of Yellowstone National Park. Rooms feature rustic yet modern furnishings, but the place guests spend most of their time is their backyard patio fronting the Yellowstone River. It's an angler's dream location, and for aspiring landscape photographers, the Paradise Valley views are hard to top. Yogo Inn

$$ | 211 E. Main St., Lewistown, MT, 59457, USA

This sprawling brick hotel on the east side of Lewistown takes its name from the Yogo sapphires mined nearby. Rooms are contemporary, spacious, and well furnished; although some rooms don't have windows facing outside. Instead, they face an indoor courtyard with a swimming pool and hot tub. The hotel and convention center is built around the Centermark Courtyard, which takes its name from surveyor documents buried here in 1912: they proclaimed the spot the geographical center of Montana. Ask at the front desk for info about nearby ghost towns and Native American petroglyphs.

YOTEL New York

$ | 570 10th Ave., New York, NY, 10036, USA

Look beyond the gimmicks (a luggage-storing robot, the futuristic white design scheme) and discover one of New York's best-run, most functional lodgings—and at a great price, too. The self-check-in lobby works like a dream, and though rooms might seem too small at first glance, they are surprisingly comfortable, accommodating giant flat-screen TVs, loungers that morph into beds with the touch of a button, nooks and crannies for storage, and smartly designed bathrooms. Larger "cabins" and suites have outdoor terraces and hot tubs. There's no room service, but a galley kitchen on each floor has free coffee, tea, water, and ice. The large outdoor space, perfect for reading and drinking coffee, becomes a hopping club on summer nights, with guest-celeb DJs.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Large common outdoor space
  • Access to West Side piers and Javits Center

Cons

  • Rooms might be too small for some
  • Limited luggage storage and hanging space

Zephyr Mountain Lodge, Fraser Crossing, Founders Pointe, and Parrys Peak Lofts

$$$ | 201 Zephyr Way, Winter Park, CO, 80482, USA

These are all condo complexes—some with individual hotel rooms, too—that are in the village at the base a short walk from the base lifts. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom units in the Zephyr are compact but comfortable, and nicely equipped, and it's the only true ski-in ski-out property in Winter Park. The condos in Fraser Crossing and Founders Pointe appear larger and brighter, while Parrys Peak Lofts are set up like townhomes and offer equally quick access to chairlifts and shops. It's best to book these properties directly through Winter Park Central Reservations. If you book through another agency in town, the front desk might not be very helpful.

This peaceful ranch-style resort with more than 50 handsomely furnished cabins and lodge-style vacation homes that sleep from 2 to 15 guests lies a mere 4 miles from the East Entrance of Zion National Park and offers a variety of activities, including horseback riding, jeep tours, and guided hikes. Amenities vary a bit from cabin to cabin, but all have fireplaces, and many have kitchens and spacious sitting areas. The high-end restaurant, Cordwood, serves some of the tastiest food in the region. Note that Wi-Fi can be unreliable in some units, and although they have TVs, they have no reception and are only for watching DVDs, which you can borrow from the lobby.

Pros

  • Rustic-chic aesthetic
  • Spectacularly scenic surroundings
  • Excellent restaurant

Cons

  • Some decor is a bit dated
  • Spotty Wi-Fi
