Sea View Inn

$$$ | 414 Myrtle Ave., Pawleys Island, SC, 29585, USA

A self-described "barefoot paradise," Sea View is a no-frills beachside boardinghouse (there are no TVs or in-room phones) with long porches. Rooms in the main inn, with views of the ocean or marsh, have half baths; showers are down the hall (private beach showers are also available outside). Cottage rooms are marsh-side and now have air-conditioning. Three meals, served family style—with grits, gumbo, crab salad, pecan pie, and oyster pie—make this an unbeatable deal. There's a two-night minimum stay during May and September and a one-week minimum from June through August.

Pros

  • Quaint, quiet oceanfront experience is completely unlike the megaresorts on the Grand Strand
  • All meals are included
  • On a quiet stretch of beach

Cons

  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Credit cards not accepted
  • Introverts may not love the close interaction with other guests

Seabrook Island

$$$$ | 3772 Seabrook Island Rd., Charleston, SC, 29455, USA

About 350 fully equipped one- to six-bedroom villas, cottages, townhomes, and homes are available on Seabrook, one of the most private of the area's island resorts. Seabrook is endowed with true Lowcountry beauty, and wildlife sightings are common: look for white-tailed deer, alligators, and even bobcats. Going to the beach is as popular as playing golf or tennis. The Beach Club and Island House are centers for dining and leisure activities. Because each unit is individually owned, Wi-Fi access varies accordingly, and rentals are made via Vacasa. The smallest units are often priced as cheaply as a hotel room, making the island a secluded, quiet value for relaxed family time. The pool complex is oceanside and is across the street from the clubhouse.

Pros

  • Safe haven for kids to play
  • The only place in the Charleston area where you can ride horses on the beach
  • Nearby upscale shopping and restaurants

Cons

  • A 45-minute drive from Charleston
  • Security can be stringent—don't drive over the posted 25 mph speed limit
  • Wi-Fi access varies according to units

This historic Mediterranean-revival inn has lovely Old Florida original touches like cypress ceilings and pine floors. It's run by Jonnie Wall Flewelling, an Indiantown native whose family has owned the property for decades. Senza Hotel

$$$ | 4066 Howard La., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

Exterior fountains, gallery-quality outdoor sculptures, and rows of grapevines signal this boutique hotel's Wine Country–chic aspirations. Shashi Hotel Mountain View

$$ | 1625 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View, CA, 94043, USA

The closest hotel to Google’s campus feels more like Palm Springs than Silicon Valley. There’s a central courtyard with palm trees, a pool, and a Jacuzzi. Elsewhere, there’s a sauna, steam room, and 24-hour fitness center including Peloton bikes. Still, it’s no surprise that the hotel has an app that allows guests to adjust preferences like lighting and temperatures in their rooms. All beds (including those in guest rooms with two beds) are king beds with very comfortable mattresses and 100% Egyptian cotton linens. Besides its location, the biggest draws for the hotel are the Emerald Hour craft cocktail bar and the Broma restaurant (Spanish cuisine).

Pros

  • Short drive to Silicon Valley offices and attractions
  • Hip, relaxed vibe
  • Free yoga and Zumba classes and private chair massages

Cons

  • Pool almost never sees sunlight
