Rio Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3700 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89103, USA

This sprawling resort with spacious rooms just west of the Strip was pioneering in its appeal to locals and visitors but fell on post-pandemic hard times before new owners, Dreamscape Cos., started sinking money into a complete renovation, but room renovations are still ongoing. By the end of 2024, the $350-million refurbishment was evident on the casino floor, with new furniture, carpeting, and wall coverings—even the new Lapa Lounge at the center of it all. The Rio's pioneering buffet became a permanent casualty of the pandemic (as did most Las Vegas buffets), but was replaced by the Canteen Food Hall, with sushi, ramen, and burgers among the choices. The sprawling pool area, another stand-out of the old days, received a complete overhaul as well. And after a five-year absence, the 51st-floor VooDoo Lounge reopened in early 2025. More than half of the rooms had been remodeled by the end of 2024 as well. The standard so-called \"suites\" don't actually have separate bedrooms, but they're spacious (at least 600 square feet), and higher-end units have double whirlpool tubs, wet bars, and other cushy touches. And the place makes up for its distance to the Strip by having plenty of entertainment options under one roof, including Penn & Teller, a family-friendly, old-school variety revue called Wow!, and a branch of New York's Comedy Cellar.

Pros

  • Spacious rooms with views
  • Several in-house show choices
  • Four pool areas

Cons

  • Just off-Strip enough to be inconvenient
  • Players club no longer part of larger network
  • Loss of signature restaurants and attractions

Other amenities include an on-site salon and spa and a contemporary fitness center with sauna and steam services and a pool. The Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

$$$$ | 3100 South St. NW, Washington, DC, 20037, USA

Once an incinerator dating from the 1920s, this building still topped with a smokestack might seem the most unlikely of places for a luxury hotel, but settle into one of the large and chicly designed guest rooms. A fire theme unites the intimate spaces, a complete departure from the chain's more traditional style, while exceptionally spacious guest rooms, outfitted in restful hues of mint and gray, convey the opposite effect. If you're looking for a place to relax, its modern spa is small but luxurious, with a relaxation lounge, steam room, and treatment rooms. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, NoMad

$$$$ | 25 W. 28th St., New York, NY, 10001, USA
Occupying a new, luxury 50-story building at the northern end of NoMad, this sleek, all-glass hotel is a departure for the Ritz brand, thanks to its emerging neighborhood, versus tried and true, location. Its double height doors whisk guests into a soothing interior of neutral, light-filled rooms paired with a food and beverage program helmed by Michelin-starred chef José Andrés. Andrés ground-floor restaurant, Zaytinya, runs Mediterranean; The Bazaar mixes Spanish and Japanese influences; and his plush rooftop bar, Nubeluz, serves tapas and cocktails alongside floor-to-ceiling windows with near-panoramic views. Request a room on the 22nd floor or above for downtown views, along with all the creature comforts you'd expect of the brand.

The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner

$$ | 1700 Tysons Blvd., Tysons Corner, VA, 22101, USA

High tea, an elegant spa, the new Metro—these are some of the features that bring guests to this hotel. The hotel is steps from the largest shopping mall in the D.C. area, and literally connected to the most upscale mall here. The rooms are small, in gold and tangerine tones, and inspired by Virginia's colonial past but with modern conveniences. The Executive and Junior suites are spacious, with seating areas, and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A full service spa and fitness center, with indoor pool and steam rooms are hard to resist, as are the wine bar and trendy American Eats Tavern by chef José Andrés. Children love the Peter Rabbit Tea Sunday through Thursday, and the hotel is a few blocks from the American Girl store.

Pros

  • Attentive staff
  • Access to shopping and dining

Cons

  • Spa is used by children
  • Distance to D.C.
  • A little worn for price

River House at Odette's

$$$$ | 274 S. River Rd., New Hope, PA, 18938, USA

The luxurious, built-from-scratch River House raised the bar for New Hope lodgings, including price-wise, filling a storied New Hope site (Chez Odette, Odette Myrtil's cabaret; later Odette's restaurant) by the Delaware Canal and the Delaware River and offering heart-lifting river views along with lovely rooms. The plush, modern guest rooms are individually decorated using six color palettes, and they include original art, upholstered headboards, Frette sheets, and colorful accent pillows; bathrooms are spalike but do not have tubs. Balconies in many are a plus. There's a piano bar by a stone fireplace, and the sleek Odette's restaurant focuses on seafood and steak. Alfresco dining in the restaurant is available in season, but the top-level ROOF bar is for hotel guests and members only. The hotel includes ample spaces for parties, weddings, and meetings, which may affect the experience of guests not involved in these functions. Parking for guests is $20 a night.

Pros

  • Riverside location half a mile from the heart of New Hope
  • Chic guest rooms and suites, some with balconies, can be cheaper midweek
  • Attractive restaurant and piano lounge (music some nights)

Cons

  • No exercise room (free bikes are available)
  • Rooftop bar open only to hotel guests and members
  • Some guests say meetings and weddings affect service
