While most upscale hotels on the Peninsular coastline are indeed on the actual coast, this delightful bed-and-breakfast resides right in the heart of Half Moon Bay's pleasant downtown. In many ways, that location brings together the best of both worlds—a short jaunt to the beach in the daytime and then walking distance to restaurants in the evening. The small B&Bs design theme is inspired by the island of Nantucket on the opposite coast, and rooms are split between the main house and a garden cottage.

Part of a complex of restaurants and shops, this well-appointed if not showy waterfront inn is within walking distance of downtown hot spots. Guest rooms, many with river views, are housed in three structures. Those in the 1884 Hatt Building, done in Victorian style, are arguably the most romantic, with deep-red walls, maple floors and other original architectural details, and old-fashioned slipper tubs. Brighter colors dominate in the rooms of the Plaza and Embarcadero buildings. Some rooms have fireplaces, and all have flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and USB charging ports. Expect solicitous staffers and amenities aplenty, starting with pastries from a nearby bakery delivered to your door for breakfast.

Clean rooms in a convenient motor court–style setting draw travelers willing to pay more than at comparable lodgings in the city of Napa to be within walking distance of Yountville's tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops. The yellow exterior, Mediterranean-style roof, and vineyards that flank the property on two sides lend a touch of Tuscan grandeur, and the pool and hot tub are large and well maintained. (There's no elevator to the upper floors, so if this is an issue ask for a ground-floor accommodation.) Every room has a balcony or patio; some have views of the pool or a garden courtyard, others of grapevines.

Travelers, especially ones with kids, appreciate these cozy accommodations—most inside actual railcars—only steps from many of Yountville's best restaurants. The inn isn't fancy, but it's clean and well maintained, and except in high season, when rates trend up, you'll save money to spend on shopping, dining, and wine tasting. More than 100 years old, the railcars house seven long narrow rooms (an eighth room is not in a car) with a bit more style than your average motel. All have small flat-panel TVs, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Rooms at this family-owned property have balconies with views of the surrounding woods and mountains. For maximum atmosphere, book a room overlooking the brook (runs in spring and early summer); for some serenity, choose a lower-level room on the edge of the forest. All accommodations are comfortably furnished with old-fashioned accents. The restaurant, decorated with moose, bison, and other mounted heads, specializes in steaks and American fare. It's open from late April until late October.

The adults-only National Hotel is a glorious time capsule that honors its distinct art deco heritage (the building itself and wood pieces in the lobby date from 1939, and new chocolate- and gold-hue furnishings look period-appropriate) while trying to keep up with SoBe's glossy newcomers (rotating art installations complement the throwback glamour). Safari-chic guest rooms, draped in leopard, zebra, and giraffe prints, are found within the historic art deco tower; the poolside cabana wing has larger suites. The hotel serves as a bastion of calm in the sea of white-on-white mod decor and raucous reveling typical of most other beachfront properties lining this stretch of Collins Avenue. The most spectacular feature is Miami Beach's longest infinity-edge pool (a whopping 203 feet long), which stretches from the tower, past a series of comfy striped cabanas and poolside tables, to a tropical tiki bar and the beach.

A large stone fireplace warms the common room, and wrought-iron lamps and antique bentwood headboards adorn the small bedrooms of this country inn, the only one of the park's two inns that's open year-round. The first hotel on this site was built in 1828, but visitors have been attracted to the Natural Bridge since Colonial times. Within walking distance of the spectacular rock arch of the same name (there's also a shuttle bus), the Colonial-style brick hotel is in a beautiful location as well as numerous recreational facilities. The hotel is similar in style to The Homestead resort but is a fraction of the price. The first stateside location of London's Ned Hotel is run by Soho House so the property doubles as a private-member venue but, unlike many Soho House properties, anyone can book its elegant prewar rooms and guests and members alike get priority access to the hotel's northern Italian restaurant, Cecconi's, and Little Ned bar, where the cocktail list is helmed by Chris Moore, whose mixology credits include Dante and the Savoy. You couldn't pick a better name for this 14-suite charmer: a lovingly rehabbed 19th-century apartment building set in Lincoln Park's residential heart, it's about as close as you can get to living like a local without signing a lease. While it's not a luxe downtown high-rise (a fact you might feel keenly aware of when you're hoofing it up the stairs), creature comforts like modern kitchenettes, soundbars, and even yoga mats abound. Better still, suites are bursting with vintage moldings, warm light, and artwork that celebrates 1980s Chicago pop culture, making for memorable, if not hyper-polished, spaces. A rear coach house offers extra privacy.

This business-district hotel caters to a corporate crowd, but it's also a convenient roosting spot for visitors to Six Flags and other sights in suburban Maryland. Recently renovated rooms come with Marriott's standard decor and include a couch and large desk. Black-and-white photos add a touch of personality. This centrally located 41-story skyscraper boasts fabulous views of the Quarter, downtown, and the Mississippi River. It's an easy walk from the Shops at Canal Place mall, the Riverwalk outlet mall, and the Convention Center. The relatively large, modern rooms at this full-service chain hotel are a good base for exploration of some of the borough's best neighborhoods. If you need to get to Manhattan, major subway lines are a block away.

The mini-Manhattan skyline is one of our favorite parts of the Strip—there are third-size to half-size facades of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the Chrysler Building, as well as the New York Public Library, Grand Central Terminal, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Rooms in this sprawling compound are quite a bit larger than typical rooms in the real Gotham, but they're not particularly fancy. Several grades of room are available, and as you pay more, you get plush amenities such as separate sitting areas with sofas, marble bathroom counters, and separate glass showers. Provided it's not a busy time of year, you can request in which tower you'd like your room to be. Also, be warned: the trek from the front desk to some of the towers can feel longer than the New York City Marathon, and the Big Apple Coaster that loops around the hotel can be intrusively loud if your room is near the tracks. Since New York–New York now frames the south side of the T-Mobile arena, the outdoor plaza connecting the arena to the Strip is a great place to people-watch and enjoy a cold adult beverage while breathing fresh air.

New-built but mimicking Federal-era design, this stone hotel faces the Niagara River. This charming 1893 limestone inn is on Nicollet Island in the middle of the Mississippi River, with downtown Minneapolis on one shore and the Riverplace and St. Anthony Main on the other. There's early-American reproduction furniture in the rooms, some of which have river views.
