The Monsaraz

$$ | 1451 Rosecrans St., San Diego, CA, 92106, USA

This Hilton property pays tribute to the Portuguese fisherman who discovered Point Loma in the 16th century, as evident in the mosaic tiles, basket lamps, and roped pillars. Beyond reception is a ground-floor bar where an in-house mixologist keeps craft cocktails flowing. Overlooking a central courtyard, rooms have mid-century decor with Portuguese artwork, and all the creature comforts including a mini-refrigerator, 55" TV, and NEST toiletries. Other perks include underground parking, electric charging stations, and pet-friendly rooms for those who travel with Fido. Local roaster, Dark Horse Coffee, set up shop so you can wrap your hands around a latte while listening to music on the courtyard. There's no pool, but the cool style and setting will make you think you're in a European beachside hotel.

The Moorings Village

$$$$ | 123 Beach Rd., FL, 33036, USA

At this tropical retreat, the embodiment of the laid-back Keys, hammocks sway between towering trees and aqua-green waves lap manicured sand. West Indies–style cottages with cypress and Dade County pine accents, colorful shutters, and private verandas sit in a canopy of coconut palms and lush landscaping on a residential street off the highway. This is a high-end slice of Old Florida, so don't expect tacky tiki bars and music; do expect the sound of rustling palms and ospreys chirping. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom cottages all have modern kitchens with modern appliances. During busy season, there may be a one-week minimum. The Moorings has the same high standards as neighboring Cheeca Lodge but is less cramped, more private and exclusive, and possibly the most beautiful property in the Keys.

This contemporary mountain inn, where peeled-pine and vine-maple furniture fills the rooms, is built of sturdy cedar and redwood and sits on a 20-acre alpine meadow with breathtaking Cascade Mountains views. The property offers direct access to miles of wildlife-abundant trails, and there's a hot tub and seasonal heated pool. Lunch and dinner, on-site or to go as a picnic, can be arranged.

Mountain Lake

$$ | 115 Hotel Circle, Pembroke, VA, 24136, USA

The 1987 movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed here, and the resort (Kellerman's in the movie) is still a popular summer getaway. Centered on the highest natural lake east of the Mississippi, accommodations range from spartan cottages to plush suites in a majestic sandstone hotel from 1930 (the resort itself predates the Civil War). You can also rent two-, three-, and four-bedroom cottages if you need more space for an extended stay. Atop the 4,000-foot Salt Pond Mountain, outdoor activities abound: you can hike, mountain bike, ride horses, swim, and boat within the 2,500-acre Mountain Lake Wilderness, which surrounds the hotel. The adjacent Jefferson National Forest offers even more recreation, including a segment of the Appalachian Trail. A 2012 renovation included a refurbishment of guestrooms and cottages and the addition of an aerial and zip-line adventure course.

Pros

  • Gorgeous scenery
  • Outdoor activities

Cons

  • Crowded in summer
  • Far from Blacksburg
