JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District

$$$$ | 400 W. River St., Savannah, GA, 31401, USA
The name is a mouthful, and that's appropriate for this massive, entertainment-packed property with an enviable location on the Savannah riverfront. Rooms are in three distinct sections: the Power Plant is a "restored" power plant left abandoned for decades before its transformation into the centerpiece of the property; the Three Muses features soft and romantic styling; and the forthcoming Atlantic, which will have a contemporary and nautical theme. Electric Moon, the hotel's rooftop bar, is one of the city's best. The Power Plant building features a chrome-dipped replica dinosaur skeleton soaring from the ceiling, and at any given time you might run into cirque performers or fire-jugglers. Some might call the decor gaudy, while others would consider it funky. Either way, Plant Riverside District, which anchors the west end of River Street, is an experience you won't have anywhere else.

Pros

  • Activity-packed area of town
  • Plenty of dining options
  • Electric Moon Skytop Lounge is one of the city's best

Cons

  • This trendy area of River Street is noisy in the evenings
  • As Savannah's newest lodging property, prices are high
  • The decor can be gauche and overstimulating

This rustic but modern log-cabin lodge on Kukak Bay straddles the rugged outer coast of Katmai National Park, along the shores of the Alaska Peninsula. This coastal area is part of the Kodiak Island Borough and the Gulf of Alaska. Built on land owned by the Russian Orthodox Church, the lodge is one of few places to stay on this coast except for camping. Mountains, coastal flats, and the waters of Shelikof Strait surround the lodge, where guests stay in private bedrooms with baths. Meals are served in the dining room or on decks if the weather is good. Activities include bear viewing, birding, photography tours, and fishing for halibut and salmon. There's a three-night-minimum stay, and rates include a round-trip flight from Kodiak, meals, lodging, and guide services.

Pros

  • Fantastic outer coast location
  • Private rooms and bathrooms with hot showers
  • Guiding services

Cons

  • Expensive
  • You have to get to Kodiak first
  • Three-night minimum

Kauai Palms Hotel

$ | 2931 Kalena St., HI, 96766, USA

Not only is this low-cost alternative close to the airport, but it's also a great base for day trips to all sides of the island. Rooms are basic, well-worn, and small, with refrigerators, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Newly added studios and two-bedroom cottages have kitchenettes or full kitchens. In summer, it's worth the extra money to get a room with air-conditioning. Coffee is available in the lobby every morning.

Pros

  • Friendly staff
  • Decent value for the money
  • Centrally located

Cons

  • Bare-bones amenities
  • Smallish rooms (ask about studios and cottages)
  • Traffic noise
