The Jay, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 433 Clay St., San Francisco, CA, 94111, USA

As one of the few hotels to open in the downtown area in recent years, this Bonvoy branded property adds a very welcome jolt of energy to the city's flagship business district. Design firm powerhouse AvroKO created the sleek look that balances a sharp modern aesthetic with the original 1980's Brutalist concrete building by architect John Portman. The spiral staircase at the entrance and the unique diagonal floor-to-ceilings in rooms are the two most notable examples of this sleek contrast of different design palates brought together. Guest rooms feature great views, giant 65-inch flat-screen TVs, plush beds, and local food and drink artisans in the mini bar.

Pros

  • Outstanding pair of on-site restaurants
  • Above average fitness center
  • Rooms feel fresh without trying to be hip

Cons

  • Only a drip coffee (no espresso) maker in rooms
  • Long waits for elevators happen too often
  • Prices seem steep for a not-quite-luxury-level hotel

Turrets, jewel-like stained-glass windows, columns, gables, and magnificent woodwork embellish this inn, built in 1898 as the home of a local attorney. The Joseph

$$ | 401 Korean Veterans Blvd., Nashville, TN, 37203, USA

This luxury hotel showcases art from the moment guests pull into the building's porte cochere and continues with impressive art installations throughout the building. The Tony Mantuano–helmed Italian restaurant Yolan in the lobby is the rare Nashville hotel dining destination that draws locals to Downtown, and upper-floor views are spectacular, including from the windows of the workout facility. The Denim rooftop bar, spa, and pool deck offer peaceful retreats from the bustle of SoBro, and even the least expensive guest rooms exude refined opulence.

Pros

  • Convenient access to Schermerhorn Symphony Center and Ascend Amphitheater
  • Premium spa offers a diverse menu of treatments
  • Gallery-worthy art pieces, many from the owner's private collection

Cons

  • Few nearby options to purchase basic sundries

The Joshua Tree Inn

$ | 61259 Twentynine Palms Hwy., Joshua Tree, CA, 92252, USA

Like the Harmony Motel in Twentynine Palms, this rustic roadside refuge will forever be a part of rock music lore, though, admittedly, it's tied to a darker moment—singer/guitarist and member of The Byrds Gram Parsons died in Room 8, which, despite its sad history and reports of paranormal activity, is still the most requested room. The inn, also a favorite of John Wayne and Donovan, wears this backstory like a badge of honor, usually playing tunes from Parsons' Grievous Angel album in the lobby, maintaining a memorabilia room, and sometimes hosting tribute concerts. Also like the Harmony, the single-story property seems stuck in time despite periodic updates (including a solar-power conversion). It's far from fancy, with dark cream-and-brown rooms with wood-paneled ceilings and mismatched furniture, so it's better suited to those making a purposeful pilgrimage than to those who seek pampering.

Pros

  • Complimentary tea, coffee, and granola bars
  • All units have personal back patios
  • Guitars to borrow during stay

Cons

  • Rooms don't get much natural light
  • Far from fancy with furnishings in a mishmash of styles
  • Pool can get loud when kids are present

Joshua Wilton House

$ | 412 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, VA, 22801, USA

A row of trees guards the privacy of this circa-1888 B&B decorated in a Victorian style and set on a large yard at the edge of the "Old Town" district. The sunroom and back patio are built for relaxation. Ask for Room 4; it has a lace-draped canopy bed and a turret sitting area with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains looming over Main Street. Room 2 has a fireplace. The restaurant's menu changes daily, its components supplied by many small, local organic farmers.

Pros

  • Full breakfast

  • Nice downtown location within walking distance of JMU

Built in 1897 by freed slave Albert Robinson and his wife, Margaret, this old hotel is Julian's only designated national landmark and the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California. The hotel offers antique-filled rooms with American period pieces, canopy beds, and handmade quilts. Cottage accommodations have private entrances, claw-foot tubs, and cast-iron fireplaces.
