Hotel RED

$$$$ | 1501 Monroe St., Madison, WI, 53711, USA

Across the street from Camp Randall Stadium, where the University of Wisconsin–Madison Badgers football team hosts home games, Hotel RED is also a quick walk to downtown Madison. Each room is decked out in pops of red and yellow—plus modern art and red-glass sinks—against an urban-chic gray-and-white palette. Sleek kitchenettes add to the convenience, and some rooms have a balcony. Ingredients used to craft small plates at The Wise, its ground-floor bistro, represent a tour of 45 Wisconsin farms. During the warmer months an outdoor patio coaxes passers-by with couches and roving bartenders.

The Hotel Redland

$ | 5 S. Flagler Ave., Homestead, FL, 33030, USA

Of downtown Homestead's smattering of mom-and-pop lodges, this historic inn is by far the most desirable. With its Victorian-style rooms done up in pastels and reproduction antique furniture, there's a fantastic restaurant and bar inside as well. Opened in 1904, this was the town's first hotel, which later became its first mercantile store, first post office, first library, and first boardinghouse. It's now recognized as the oldest building in the city. Each of the 13 charming rooms feature unique layouts and furnishings, and some provide access to a shared balcony. Owners have transformed the hotel's restaurant on the first floor into City Hall Bistro-Martini Bar, a foodie haven for Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine with guitar music on weekends. There's free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Pros

  • Historic charm
  • Conveniently located
  • Excellent dining

Cons

  • Traffic noise
  • Small rooms

Hotel Royal

$ | 431 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA, 90802, USA

A great value for Long Beach, the family-owned, European-style Hotel Royal makes up for in kindness what it lacks in fancy extras. Think free breakfast, a lively wine happy hour, and free bike rentals. The hotel was built in 1923 in the art deco style and is in the center of Long Beach's au courant East Village arts district. In keeping with the building's age, the small lobby and some of the rooms have exposed brick walls. If you really want to live your 1920s dream, you can even reserve a room with a built-in Murphy bed, which folds out of sight when you're not using it. The decor is somewhat uninspired, but for the price, the Royal has all you need. The studios, lofts, and suites are individually decorated. Some rooms have en suite private baths, while less-expensive options share a bathroom with other rooms on the floor. Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, but there's a fully stocked community kitchen, making this a perfect stop for families, larger groups who want to spend time together, or those who prefer to cook. While not oceanfront, the hotel is a 15-minute walk from the beach.

Pros

  • Lively happy hour
  • Free breakfast and bike rentals
  • Stocked community kitchen good for families

Cons

  • No elevator
  • $25 parking (but inexpensive for Long Beach)
  • Some rooms share bathrooms

Hotel Santa Fe

$$$$ | 1501 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM, 87501, USA

Picurís Pueblo has controlling interest in this handsome Pueblo-style three-story hotel on the Railyard District's edge and a 15-minute walk from the Plaza. The light, airy rooms and suites are traditional Southwestern, with locally handmade furniture, wooden blinds, and Pueblo paintings; many have balconies. The hotel gift shop, Santa Fe's only tribally owned store, has lower prices than many nearby retail stores, and the hotel's rooms and common areas are decorated with a museum-quality collection of Native American artworks. The 35 rooms and suites in the posh Hacienda wing have corner fireplaces and the use of a well-trained butler. Amaya is one of the better hotel restaurants in town, and there's a full-service spa offering a nice range of treatments as well as a refreshing garden pool. Hotel Warm Springs Bed and Breakfast Inn

$ | 47 Broad St., Warm Springs, GA, 31830, USA

In downtown Warm Springs, this historic hotel has plenty of character—the guest rooms have oak furniture and 12-foot ceilings with crown molding. Prices are even cheaper if you opt not to have breakfast, though this means you'll miss out on a full-service Southern breakfast with cheese grits. The Tuscawilla Soda Company off the lobby is a treat to visit—it was the town's original drugstore and soda fountain, often frequented by FDR himself. Unlike many B&Bs, children are welcome here and some rooms are even pet friendly.

Pros

  • Convenient to Warm Springs' sights
  • Storied history
  • Amazing Southern breakfast

Cons

  • No elevator
  • Some say rooms and public spaces could use some refreshing
  • Child-friendly atmosphere not for everyone
