Fodor's Expert Review Mashariki Palace Hotel
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The street entrance might seem dilapidated at first but as you round the corner you are greeted by giant white columns extending far into the ceilings—a grand entrance recalling the centuries of sultans, traders, and adventurers that have graced Zanzibar’s shores. The palace was one the domicile of the Sultan's religious counselor, but over the years it fell into disrepair. Fortunately a group of historical enthusiasts took on a project to restore the building and it has now become a magnificently unique accommodation experience. Be sure to view the old photographs of the building before restoration. Wake up to a world that smells of frangipanis and cloves in your uniquely decorated room where no two are the same. Food is delicious and dinners on the terrace overlooking parts of the town and parts of the ocean is a particular treat.
