Fodor's Expert Review Silver Oaks Guest Ranch

73-4570 Mamalahoa Hwy., just north of Kaloko Dr., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 96740, USA See on Map

Three private cottages set on a 10-acre working ranch afford total privacy, with a few more amenities than a vacation house or condo. Owners Mark and Amy drop off a welcome basket with breakfast goodies your first day, and there's a washer and dryer in each unit, an outdoor pool, and a hot tub. The ranch is like a little petting zoo with horses, friendly goats, and chickens throughout.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Both of the primary accommodations require a five-night minimum stay.

The ranch has two primary dwellings for guests, the Ranch View Cottage and the Ranch House Cottage, both 900 square feet in size with ocean views, living/dining room, full kitchen, and washer/dryer. In addition, guests booking one of the cottages can add on the Ocean View Suite or Coast View Room if they have a large party.

Your hosts provide plenty of beach gear like snorkels, boogie boards, reef boots, coolers, and more. Be sure to take advantage of them.

Both cottages have private baths. Ranch View Cottage includes a jacuzzi tub.

There is a large in-deck pool for guests to use. Ranch House Cottage has a private in-deck hot tub.

Getting Around

You will need a car to get to the ranch and around the island.

If you booked a Hawaiian vacation mostly because you love poke and seafood, you’ll definitely want to stop by Sun Dried Specialties (28-minute drive) – the name might not leave much of an impression, but the food definitely will. Rays on the Bay (27-minute drive) has tranquil ocean views, lovingly crafted local dishes from the land, ocean, and gardens, and a really incredible ahi poke stack that makes for a perfect start to your meal.

TJ’s Pau Hana Hale (15-minute drive) is a new sports bar getting lots of love by locals, particularly because TJ is such a nice guy and makes a mean Old Fashioned. Get drinks and a show at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar (15-minute drive), an open-air jazz bar with great beer and wine selections, plus a few decadent desser-tinis to complement their cocktail list.

The ranch is quiet, the hosts are warm and friendly, and getting to visit the farm’s animals and taste the tropical fruits growing there are perks that add a really special touch. It really helps to create a home away from home for active travelers.
