Fodor's Expert Review Horizon Guest House

Mamalahoa Hwy., between mile markers 101 and 100, Captain Cook, Hawaii, 96704, USA See on Map

Surrounded by McCandeless Ranch on 40 acres in South Kona, this place may seem remote, but it's actually just a short drive from some of the best water attractions on the island, including Puuhonua O Honaunau, Kealakekua Bay, and Hookena Beach. The gated driveway winds past herds of goats, donkeys, horses, cows, and llamas. Offering four suites with private entrances and lanais, plus beautiful ocean views, this tastefully appointed inn includes an open-air living area, plus a media room with a DVD library of 1,000 titles. Buffet breakfast is served by the owner, plus there's a barbecue facility by the pool that includes cutlery, plates, and utensils. Snorkel and beach gear are available. Guests enjoy a 15% discount on stays of seven or more nights.

Check in begins at 2 p.m., one of the earliest check in times on the island.

There are four suites at the guesthouse, all with king beds, except for the honeymoon suite that has a queen bed. All have their own refrigerators and private entries and lanais. Beautifully decorated, the genuine Hawaiian quilts are a really special treat.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The guesthouse is not designed for children ages 14 and under, so this is more of a couples of individual retreat than one for families.

The en suite bathrooms are a decent size, with a large vanity and separate water closet.

The guesthouse includes an infinity pool and a hot tub with gorgeous views.

Though there is no on-site restaurant, guests can enjoy a breakfast buffet at any of the lovely guesthouse areas including dining room, lanai, pool-side, or on your room’s private lanai. There is also a gas grill for guests to use.

Getting Around

You’ll need a car to get to the guesthouse and around the island.

The Strawberry Patch (21-minute drive) has a variety of fresh made fare that includes curries, salads, and pastas. Not only do they have dinner service, but they also offer picnic basket service. Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe (35-minute drive) is a slow food restaurant that sources lots of its ingredients locally (most within five miles of the restaurant) and changes its menu regularly based on the season and available ingredients.

With lava flow and mai tai flights (they have 10 different kinds), there’s plenty to love at Don’s Mai Tai Bar (38-minute drive). Thursday nights are particularly fun as they host a weekly Hawaiian music series. The Big Island’s newest brewery, community-owned Ola Brewery (41-minute drive), offers brewery tours and tastes. Be sure to try the White Pineapple Cider!

The beautifully manicured terraced sloping grounds produce expansive views of the ocean that are visible from nearly everywhere on the property, adding to the luxurious feel of the entire property.
The property is surrounded by 15,000 acres of ranch land, ensuring privacy and serenity, and the pool and hot tub are just divine.
