Getting Oriented

Scattered along a vast coastal plain that covers much of the southern part of the state, the small towns of southwest Georgia are best explored by car or by the SAM Shortline. The touring train chugs through the countryside between Cordele and Archery.

  • Warm Springs. Explore the Little White House and healing pools where FDR found respite.
  • Pine Mountain. Enjoy the natural beauty at Callaway Gardens–-the gem of Pine Mountain–-and at F. D. Roosevelt State Park. To take some local treasures home with you, head to the eclectic antiques shops.
  • Columbus. Experience military pride in this town along the Chattahoochee River that is home to Fort Benning as well as plenty of outstanding museums and cultural institutions. For some adventure, raft through the heart of the city on the largest urban white-water course in the world.
  • Plains. Learn about Jimmy Carter's heritage at this tiny farming community that was, and still is, home to America's 39th president. The small town fills to the brim on the Sundays when President Carter teaches Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church.
  • Thomasville. Steep yourself in Southern charm at this once-prominent Victorian Age health resort. Elaborate Victorian mansions reflect Thomasville's tony past, while its revitalized downtown filled with shops and eateries exemplifies its vibrant present.
