9 Best Hotels in Summit County, Colorado

Background Illustration for Hotels

Summit County is a great place for history buffs looking for redone Victorian mining mansions–cum–bed-and-breakfasts and budget hunters who want affordable rooms close to the slopes. The county probably has the highest density of condominium units in the state. The competition tends to keep prices lower than in other resort towns. Note that staff at hotels in the region are sometimes young and inexperienced, which may result in less-than-desirable service at some otherwise excellent properties. Also note that many accommodations do not have air-conditioning—beware that rooms with southern exposure warm up quickly. Summer nights, however, are often cool enough in the mountains that opening the windows will do the trick.

Copper Mountain Resort

$$$$ | 509 Copper Rd., Copper Mountain, CO, 80443, USA

Copper Mountain Resort manages the majority of lodging in the area, ranging from standard hotel rooms to spacious condos and townhomes. The Center Village is the heart of the action, as it's close to most of the shops and restaurants. Unlike Vail with its Tyrolean feel and Breckenridge with its mining-town roots, Copper Mountain Resort was built from scratch, and has a more modern and function-over-form feel, with concrete towers showing just a hint of alpine architecture. East Village is not as centrally located but provides easier access to the mountain's more challenging terrain.

Pros

  • Located near expert skiing terrain
  • Wide range of accommodations
  • Includes use of the Copper Mountain Spa and Athletic Club

Cons

  • Village can be noisy
  • Quality of rooms varies greatly
  • Novice skiers will have to trek to the West Village

Delaware Hotel

$$ | 700 Harrison Ave., Leadville, CO, 80461, USA

This artfully restored 1886 hotel is one of the best examples of high Victorian architecture in the area, so it's no surprise that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Keystone Lodge and Spa

$$ | 22101 U.S. 6, Keystone, CO, 80435, USA

The cinder-block structure gives no hint of the gracious, pampered living inside the door at this lodge next to the tiny lake in Keystone Village, close to several restaurants and shops. Rooms with king-size beds are on the small side, whereas rooms with two queen-size beds tend to be more generously proportioned. Many rooms have terraces overlooking the trees and Snake River. Perhaps best of all, a short shuttle ride delivers you directly to the slopes. After skiing, the resort spa provides a welcome respite.

Pros

  • One of the larger properties in the resort
  • Lovely on-site spa
  • Dog-friendly

Cons

  • Rooms are small
  • Hot tubs get crowded
  • Limited housekeeping
