Fodor's Expert Review Chimney Rock National Monument

Pagosa Springs Archaeological Site/Ruins

About 16 miles west of Pagosa Springs, State Highway 151 heads south to Chimney Rock National Monument. Twin spires of rock loom over the ruins of more than 100 homes and ceremonial buildings built about 1,000 years ago on a high mesa. Open in the summer, the area offers 2½-hour guided walking tours. The trail is short, but steep and exposed, so bring plenty of water. You can also take a self-guided tour of the Great Kiva Trail.
