31 Best Hotels in Denver, Colorado

Background Illustration for Hotels

Denver's lodging choices include the stately Brown Palace, bed-and-breakfasts, and business hotels. Unless you're planning a quick escape to the mountains, consider staying in or around downtown, where most of the city's attractions are within walking distance. Many of the hotels cater to business travelers, with accordingly lower rates on weekends—many establishments slash their rates in half on Friday and Saturday. The three hotels in the vicinity of Cherry Creek are about a 10- to 15-minute drive from downtown.

The ART Hotel

$$$ | 1201 Broadway, Denver, CO, 80203, USA Fodor's Choice

Each floor of rooms in this nine-story building is dedicated to a different artist, with original art in every room by the artist, as well—you can't miss the entry-level greeting Wall Drawing #397 by Sol LeWitt or the video art in the elevators that signal this is going to be a unique lodging experience. The eclectic rooms feature vividly colored pillows, furniture in fanciful yet quite comfortable shapes, and welcome touches such as white marble bathrooms, espresso machines, expandable workstations, and very soft bathrobes. The hotel sits next to the Denver Art Museum—the museum’s curator of 30 years was also responsible for assembling the $100 million in pieces at ART, almost all of which can be viewed simply by asking a staff member to escort you—and is within walking distance of many other art museums as well as across the street from the History Colorado Center. Let's not forget the incredible views from the upper-floor rooms and the restaurant and lounge. The window-surrounded, fourth-floor restaurant, Fire, serves modern American cuisine and offers an art-heavy, stylish, and inviting atmosphere, with the one-story-high, Mylar-based Light Knots by Larry Bell as its centerpiece. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls between the lobby and outdoor lounge area operate like sliding doors and are left open on temperate evenings, and the firepit, also a work of art, surrounds comfortable seating that leads to private, covered seating elsewhere on the patio overlooking Broadway.

Pros

  • Compelling art collection
  • Comfortable, stylish rooms
  • Incredible views from upper floors

Cons

  • Check-in can be confusing
  • Restaurant food and service uneven
  • Conventions sometimes overcrowd the hotel

Just across from Union Station's train platform, the stylish and warmly welcoming Hotel Born is decorated with natural materials that evoke Colorado's alpine setting, from knotty-pine headboards and sumptuous leather upholstery to flannel-style fabrics and Western-themed art. Kimpton Hotel Monaco

$$$ | 1717 Champa St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

Celebrities and business travelers check into this hip property, which occupies the historic 1917 Railway Exchange Building and the 1937 art moderne Title Building, for the modern perks and art deco–meets–classic-French style. A remodel brought rich blue and brown hues to the inviting rooms, accented by metallic decor details and warm leather upholstery. The service is similarly a cut above: room service is available around the clock; guests can use complimentary bicycles; yoga mats are placed in each room; and pets are welcome and pampered, down to delivered water bowls and access to a dog-walking service. Elegant Panzano, which serves creative Northern Italian cuisine, has long been one of the best restaurants in the city.

Populus Hotel

$$ | 240 14th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

With an eye-popping exterior design (its jagged collection of slit-shaped windows on an all-white 13-story building is meant to evoke the Colorado state tree, the aspen), this boutique hotel goes all in on the environment: everything about its thoughtfully curated design is nature-focused, from the natural textiles to the forest sounds on the elevator speakers, while its biggest flex is that it aims to be the first carbon-positive hotel in the country. Public spaces are meant to mirror a forest floor, with the lobby and second-floor gathering spaces composed of varying wood shades and earthy art installations like a draped mycelium fabric above the first-floor bar. Upon exiting the elevator to the guest floors, visitors meet a darkened hallway meant to mimic the inner workings of a tree canopy, but the guest rooms themselves are all light thanks to the aforementioned geometric windows. Much of the furniture is upcycled and/or locally sourced, and the rooms are decked out in calming muted tones and pressed local wildflower art prints; beds are comfortable, toiletries are luxe, and about a third of the rooms have built in hammock-like benches to enjoy the windows and views. The ground-floor restaurant and bar, Pasque, serves elevated American cuisine with strong Colorado flavors for all three meals and the lobby coffee bar, Little Owl, offers pastries and locally roasted coffee. The culinary highlight is the rooftop bar and restaurant, Stellar Jay, which offers a similar menu to Pasque but with a wood-fired twist, along with creative cocktails and unbeatable views of the State Capital and surrounding neighborhood. All of this would be impressive on its own, but Populus takes it a step further with its focus on sustainability. Nearly all the disposable material in public spaces and guest rooms is compostable, there’s an on-site biodigester designed to ensure all food waste created is composted, and the hotel promises to plant a tree for every night every guest stays (achieving the coveted goal of becoming carbon positive).

Pros

  • As environmentally sustainable as hotels come
  • Gorgeous, impeccably sourced design
  • Great rooftop bar, restaurant, and coffee shop on-site

Cons

  • Not much dining or nightlife in the surrounding neighborhood
  • Paid valet parking a bit pricey
  • Least expensive rooms on the small side

The Ritz-Carlton, Denver

$$$$ | 1881 Curtis St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

This beautiful property features warm woods, elaborate glass fixtures, and luxurious details, and the pampering service is typical of the chain. The location is good—it's only two blocks from the 16th Street Mall—but the Ritz makes it tough to leave your room, with its buttery leather furniture, featherbeds, oversize baths, and espresso machines. The state-of-the-art fitness center is complimentary; the spa is almost too pretty and has a full range of treatments emphasizing natural products. The club-level rooms start at an extra $200 per night and garner five food offerings throughout the day as well as a dedicated business center. Located atop the Milk Market on the Dairy Block within walking distance of Coors Field, the Maven's quiet, larger-than-average rooms help shield guests from the chaos going on in the lobby and surrounding area. The front desk is a bit hidden within the bustling entrance, but once upstairs that all fades away in the modern, chic rooms, which offer lofted ceilings, massive windows with Coors Field or city views, and art that's unique to each space (the art hanging around the rest of the hotel is worth checking out, too). JW Marriott Denver at Cherry Creek

$$$$ | 150 Clayton La., Denver, CO, 80206, USA

Renaissance Denver Downtown Hotel

$$$ | 918 17th St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA
The Renaissance's gorgeous hotel lobby is part of the original 1925 Colorado National Bank building, whose 16 vivacious Western-themed murals have been painstakingly restored; rooms are remarkably stylish, with sparkly glitter accents on pillows and blues and browns complementing the plush white linens. The cozy Teller Bar ($$) is a hot spot during happy hour for locals; it's where the tellers once conducted business but now serves small bites and craft cocktails. The Western saloon–themed Range ($$$) serves three locally sourced meals daily that take their cues from the Spanish Mexican and Old West foods of the area (the smoked buffalo brisket hash is a nice way to start the day).
