Fodor's Expert Review School House Restaurant & Tavern
A Wine Country–style establishment that sources ingredients from the on-site gardens and surrounding farms and orchards, this popular restaurant occupies a redbrick 1921 schoolhouse in the town of Sanger. Chef Ryan Jackson, who grew up on local fruit farms, returned home after stints cooking at prestigious Napa Valley restaurants to create seasonal menus from the bounty of familiar backyards. The fare might include salmon ratatouille with summer vegetables, braised duck Stroganoff in a mushroom-Cabernet sauce, or lobster salad tossed with local peaches and roasted peach vinaigrette. With salads, pizza, pasta, and sandwiches, lunch is more basic. You can eat in the main dining room (the former school auditorium), the more casual tavern, or by the outdoor patio's fire pits.
