Fodor's Expert Review Sutter's Fort

Sacramento Museum Village

German-born Swiss immigrant John Augustus Sutter founded Sacramento's earliest Euro-American settlement in 1839. A self-guided tour includes a blacksmith's shop, bakery, prison, living quarters, and livestock areas. Costumed docents sometimes reenact fort life, demonstrating crafts, food preparation, and firearms maintenance.
