Fodor's Expert Review Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
San Diego County Parks and Recreation manages this 3,000-acre preserve, where hikes challenge your stamina and views are stunning. A 5-mile trail through the preserve passes through Engelmann oak forest, native manzanita, and rolling mountain meadows to a viewpoint where the panorama extends north all the way to Palomar Mountain. On a clear day you can see Point Loma in San Diego. At the entrance you pass through gates designed by James Hubbell, a local artist known for his ironwork, wood carving, and stained glass. You can see splendid views from the Volcan Summit. Guided hikes on the Sky Island Trail and the Five Oaks Trail are offered regularly.
