$$$$ Napa Japanese

Fodor’s Expert Review

A rotating series of all-star Tokyo-based chefs supplies the seasonally changing multicourse kaiseki menus at the downtown Napa restaurant opened by the Japanese founder of Kenzo Estate Winery. Delicate preparations such as straw-smoked sashimi, eel and rice wrapped in bamboo leaf, and steamed turnip dumpling with Dungeness crab sauce were among the highlights of the three prix-fixe menus ($225–$270, service included) when the restaurant debuted in late 2016. From the limestone floor to the cedar walls and cypress tabletops, most of the materials used to build the restaurant were imported from Japan, as was the ceramic dinnerware. Not unlike the food, the aesthetic is spare but beautiful.
