Delivering romance, relaxation, and Zenlike tranquillity is the raison d'être of this courtyard complex 1½ blocks north of Sonoma Plaza. Near restaurants, shops, and tasting rooms but quiet and seemingly off the beaten path, the Cottage Inn pleases sensitive travelers with serene style and graceful touches. El Dorado Hotel

$$ | 405 1st St. W, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

Guest rooms in this remodeled 1843 building skew contemporary with their Restoration Hardware furnishings, but the Mexican-tile floors hint at Sonoma's mission-era past. Each room has a small balcony or patio either street-side or facing a courtyard where guests lounge around the pool or sip cocktails. Although many patrons consider the Sonoma Plaza location above a bustling restaurant and bar a boon, earplugs are advised for all but the heaviest sleepers.

  • On-site El Dorado Kitchen restaurant
  • Central location

Cons

  • Rooms are small, though patios and balconies keep them from feeling claustrophobic
  • Street noise audible in some rooms

The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection

$$$$ | 1325 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

A handsome base for Sonoma Valley wine tasting, this 10-acre, two-story, Mission Revival–style hotel received a makeover completed in 2022 that elevated the property to higher status among the Marriott family's luxury brands. The upgrades are most evident in the public areas, where a mural behind the front desk and the lobby's salon-style assemblage of paintings, drawings, photos, and ceramic plates highlight Sonoma's history. Celebrity chef Michael Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern is the fine-dining option, and there's a smaller café for breakfast and lunch. The fitness center's off to one side; the full spa at the back of the landscaped property contains a large outdoor relaxation area. Most rooms measure just under 400 square feet, with several junior suites slightly larger. Done in muted tones, all the accommodations have pillow-top mattresses, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and small refrigerators. Most have private outdoor seating areas, some with tubs.

Pros

  • Landscaped grounds with many native trees and plants
  • Michael Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern
  • Spa with large outdoor relaxation area

Cons

  • Not all rooms have tubs or fireplaces
  • Sizable resort fee (for afternoon wine tasting, free bicycle use, Wi-Fi, and other amenities)
