Dawn Ranch

$$ | 16467 Hwy. 116, Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

A woodsy 22-acre property positioned as a deluxe, reconnect-with-nature variation on mid-century roadside resorts, Dawn Ranch provides accommodations ranging from one-room, cedar-shingled cabins and larger "chalets" with sitting areas to cottages and a bungalow. High-quality beds, linens, and bath products signal the upscale intent, but the minimal decor and the rooms’ lack of TVs place the emphasis on unplugging and unwinding. The resort helps guests achieve this goal with grounds containing meadows, a fruit orchard, a culinary garden, and a path through redwoods, oaks, and sycamores leading down to a Russian River dock. The sandy Johnson’s Beach is a short walk away. On-site activities include yoga and meditation sessions and occasional live music on the patio below The Lodge at Dawn Ranch restaurant, whose cuisine draws inspiration from California, South America, and Europe. Several “glamping” tents are set up in the orchard from late spring to early fall.

Pros

  • High-quality beds, linens, and bath products
  • The Lodge for cuisine inspired by California, South America, and Europe
  • Emphasis on unplugging and unwinding

Cons

  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends
  • Some rooms are across the highway from the office, restaurant, and meadows
  • No TVs in rooms (but solid Wi-Fi)

Mine + Farm | The Inn at Guerneville, CA

$$ | 12850 River Rd., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

San Franciscans involved in the maker movement moved seamlessly into hospitality with this 3-acre cannabis-friendly bed-and-breakfast, whose novel concept and sustainable practices landed it a slot on Time’s 2024 The World’s Greatest Places list. The multilevel main building, a renovated 1906 farmhouse, contains six guest rooms (two smallish), a large-windowed living room–like space, and a communal dining room where the hosts serve a full breakfast with a hot entrée. A carriage house steps away holds three larger pet-friendly rooms. All the accommodations, furnished in a simple contemporary style that complements the forest setting, have high-speed Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and updated bathrooms; some rooms have fireplaces. Guests have access to a designated refrigerator in the kitchen. The outdoor areas, which include picnic spots, places to smoke, and a farm that supplies some of the breakfast’s produce, heighten this forward-thinking operation’s appeal.

Pros

  • Filling organic breakfast included in rate
  • Forward-thinking agricultural and social perspective
  • Outdoor areas

Cons

  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement
  • Only three rooms dog-friendly

The Stavrand Russian River Valley

$$$ | 13555 Hwy. 116, Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

Redwoods tower over this secluded, romantic boutique resort convenient to Guerneville restaurants, Sonoma Coast and Russian River wineries, and Armstrong Woods and other outdoorsy attractions. General manager and co-owner Emily Glick, whose previous experience in the luxury hotel realm includes a long stint with the Kimpton chain, revitalized the Mission Revival–style complex, whose oldest, architecturally significant section dates to the early 1920s. Exemplary service, attention to detail in the rooms and public spaces, a pool and a hot tub, and a slew of upscale amenities (full breakfast with hot entrée, an evening apéritif, a small spa, bicycles, kayaks, s'mores kits, lawn games, and a lending library with board games) make this the right choice for travelers seeking customized hospitality in a rustic setting.

Pros

  • Pool and hot tub under the redwoods
  • Full hot breakfast, evening apéritif, and other upscale amenities
  • Hotel is independent, but Hilton Honors members can redeem or earn points

Cons

  • Car necessary for most outings
  • Solar-heated pool not always that warm
  • Smallest rooms can feel cramped

AutoCamp Russian River

$$$ | 14120 Old Cazadero Rd., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Guests at this spot along the Russian River camp (well, sort of) in luxury under the redwoods in cute-as-a-button Airstream trailers decked out with top-notch beds, linens, and bath products, with smaller "Happier Camper" and tent options (not year-round) only for two. The cleverly modified Airstreams have all the mod cons and remarkably roomy bathrooms with walk-in showers. Ten luxury tents, a relative bargain, are set up during the summer. They don't have showers, but guests use the facilities in the mid-century modern–inspired clubhouse.

Pros

  • Some Airstreams have private hot tubs outside
  • Comfortable down beds
  • Campfire and barbecue pit for each Airstream

Cons

  • Lacks room service and other hotel amenities
  • Fee for housekeeping
  • Tents late spring–mid-fall only, with two-guest maximum including children

Boon Hotel + Spa

$$ | 14711 Armstrong Woods Rd., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Redwoods, Douglas firs, and palms supply shade and seclusion at this lushly landscaped resort ¾ mile north of downtown Guerneville. The pool and hot tub, both saline, and the on-site spa facilitate decompressing, but Main Street's bustle and dining options—including Boon Eat + Drink, under the same management—are easily accessible. The hotel provides complimentary orange bikes for rides into town, out to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, or over to wineries and river beaches. Most guest rooms surround the pool, but a few quieter ones lie toward the property's rear. Beyond them, and more peaceful still, are a vintage camper and, available in summer only, three tasteful tent rooms sitting atop wooden platforms.

Pros

  • Breakfast delivered to rooms
  • Saline pool and hot tub
  • Additional rooms at co-owned, LGBTQ+ friendly The Highlands nearby

Cons

  • Lacks amenities of larger properties
  • Pool rooms too close to the action for some guests
  • Per website “a 21+ adult property"

The Highlands

$ | 14000 Woodland Dr., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Two hoteliers with an eye for low-budget panache teamed up to rejuvenate the decades-old cabins at this redwood-studded hillside (TV-free) adult property near downtown and the main Russian River beach. One of the proprietors, Crista Luedtke, also operates the nearby Boon Hotel + Spa and Boon Eat + Drink restaurants. Retro touches like burlwood coffee tables, redwood paneling, Formica tables, and floral curtains evoke Guerneville's mid-century casual-resort era, while the LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere recalls the area's 1970s and 1980s heyday. Two accommodations are small (but good for solo travelers), and pets are only permitted in three rooms. The room rate includes a continental breakfast.

  • Pool and pool lounge
  • LGBTQ-friendly

Cons

  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement
