Cottage Grove Inn

1711 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, California 94515, USA

Daniel Mangin

A long driveway lined with freestanding cottages, each shaded by elm trees and with rocking chairs on the porch, looks a bit like Main Street, USA, but inside the skylighted buildings include all the perks necessary for a romantic weekend getaway. Spas and restaurants are within walking distance, and the rates include afternoon wine and cheese.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The inn sits on a residential street just off Calistoga's main drag, Lincoln Avenue. Some rooms close to Lincoln pick up a little street noise or sounds from a nearby apartment building.

room

Each cottage has its own variation on the comfy-rustic look, with overstuffed chairs in front of gas or wood-burning fireplaces and front porches with wicker furniture the constant. Rich pastels, high-quality bedding and linens, and colorful throws and pillows add a touch of style. In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, safes, Keurig coffee machines, and a picnic basket for winery lunches.

In addition to their front porches, four cottages have outdoor patios.

bathroom

All the bathrooms have pastel-colored tile walk-in showers and extra-deep 100-gallon two-person Jacuzzi tubs tastefully separated from the commodes.

lobby

A building near the middle of the property houses the tile-floor office and lobby, which has outdoor seating in front. In addition to the check-in area, there are shelves with books and gift items for sale. Front desk staffers are happy to help guests arrange dinner, spa, or winery reservations.

gym

There's no gym, but if you're in need of a little exercise, bikes are available for short rides to downtown or out in the country.

dining

A full breakfast, the only meal served at Cottage Grove, is presented buffet style in a room off the lobby. Guests can dine here, outside on the front patio, or load up a tray and return to their cottages. Hot entrées might include scrambled eggs, quiche, bagel sandwiches, or burritos, all served along with granola, fresh fruit and juices, yogurt, cereals, and regular coffee or espresso.

drinking

The inn has no bar, but wine and cheese are served daily between 5 and 7. Selections include two whites and two reds, usually from the Napa Valley.

LOCATION

Getting Around

On the north end of downtown Calistoga, the inn is within a short walk from shops, spas, tasting rooms, and restaurants. Many of Calistoga's several dozen wineries are a short drive away off Highway 29, Highway 128, or the Silverado Trail. VINE Bus 10 and Bus 29 serve Calistoga from other Napa Valley towns. With short notice, the free on-demand Calistoga Shuttle (schedule varies depending on the day and time of year) will take you anywhere in town, and a few spots beyond.

Restaurants

Casual Sushi Mambo (1-minute walk) serves variations on country-Japanese dishes. Head to Sam's Social Club (2-minute walk) at the Indian Springs resort for breakfast, lunch, bar snacks, or dinner, Evangeline (5-minute walk) for California cuisine with a New Orleans twist, and the Solage resort's Solbar (2-minute drive) for sophisticated Modern American.

Bars

The nearest full bar is at Sam's Social Club (2-minute walk), which pours its own and other beers, along with Napa Valley and other wines. Signature cocktails include cask-aged Manhattans and the popular The Girl’s Getaway (vodka, St. Germain, grapefruit, lime, and agave). Susie's Bar (5-minute walk), the town's sweet dive bar, has good beers on tap and by the bottle, plus top-shelf spirits at reasonable prices.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The inn's tall elms, individual lodgings, and lush landscaping create the impression of a carefully tended self-contained retreat. The cottages are situated to provide maximum privacy, but the front porches sit close enough to the single lane threading through this unassuming property that it's easy to strike up a neighborly conversation with other guests should you choose. Although it lacks the amenities of the larger resorts nearby, the Cottage Grove makes up for this, at least in part, in homey charm.
