Hampton Inn Petaluma

$ | 450 Jefferson St., Petaluma, CA, 94952, USA

The former Carlson-Currier Silk Mill, its oldest section dating to 1892, houses this atypical Hampton Inn, some of whose guest rooms have 14-foot ceilings and exposed-brick walls. Historical maps and vintage and recent Petaluma photographs decorate the rooms, done in rich gray tones that complement the red brick. Some standard queen rooms feel small, but the suites are spacious. Business travelers enjoy access to photocopying and a few other amenities. A plentiful buffet is laid out each morning in the mill's former dye room, a contender for the chain's classiest breakfast venue.

Pros

  • Original architectural details in some rooms
  • Classy breakfast area
  • Fitness and business centers

Cons

  • Traffic noise (ask for a historic room away from the road)
  • Some standard rooms are small
  • No pool, nondescript neighborhood

Harvest Inn

$$$ | 1 Main St., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA

Although this inn sits just off Highway 29, its patrons remain mostly above the fray, strolling 8 acres of gardens, enjoying views of the vineyards adjoining the property, and drifting to sleep in beds adorned with fancy linens and down pillows. Guest rooms are in several two-story Tudor-style shake-shingled structures; Vineyard View suites are almost twice as big as Harvest Views suites and come with a pull-out sofa. Worth the extra cost are the accommodations in the property's rear, with outdoor hot tubs nearly within reach of vines farmed by nearby Whitehall Lane Winery. Most rooms have a clubby feel, with dark-wood furniture and leather chairs set off by white bedding and walls, and many rooms have brick wood-burning fireplaces. Choice wineries, dining spots, and shops are steps or a short drive away.

Pros

  • Garden setting
  • Spacious rooms
  • Near choice wineries, restaurants, and shops

Cons

  • Fair amount of wedding action
  • Rooms could be nicer for the high-season price
  • Occasional service lapses

The Highlands

$ | 14000 Woodland Dr., Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA

Two hoteliers with an eye for low-budget panache teamed up to rejuvenate the decades-old cabins at this redwood-studded hillside (TV-free) adult property near downtown and the main Russian River beach. One of the proprietors, Crista Luedtke, also operates the nearby Boon Hotel + Spa and Boon Eat + Drink restaurants. Retro touches like burlwood coffee tables, redwood paneling, Formica tables, and floral curtains evoke Guerneville's mid-century casual-resort era, while the LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere recalls the area's 1970s and 1980s heyday. Two accommodations are small (but good for solo travelers), and pets are only permitted in three rooms. The room rate includes a continental breakfast.

  • Pool and pool lounge
  • LGBTQ-friendly

Cons

  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement

Hotel E

$$ | 37 Old Courthouse Sq., Santa Rosa, CA, 95404, USA

This downtown hotel's developer renovated a four-story 1908 Beaux Arts former bank into a boutique property within walking distance of restaurants, bars, and shops and less than a 10-minute drive to vineyards and tasting rooms. Period photos of Santa Rosa and rural Sonoma County line the broad hallways, off which lie rooms whose contemporary decor incorporates country touches like unpainted wooden desks and armoires and barn-style bathroom doors. Some rooms are smallish, but all are thoughtfully organized, and the electronics are au courant.

Hôtel Les Mars

$$$$ | 27 North St., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA

This Relais & Châteaux property takes the prize for opulence with guest rooms, spacious and elegant enough for French nobility, furnished with 18th- and 19th-century antiques and reproductions, canopy beds dressed in luxe linens, and gas-burning fireplaces. Most of the white-marble bathrooms have spa tubs in addition to enormous showers. The 20-foot exposed-beam ceilings of third-floor Grand King rooms contribute to their palatial air; second-floor rooms have a slightly more understated style. The hotel, which has a restaurant and bar and a wood-paneled library off the lobby, has the feel of a sumptuous Left Bank mansion.

Hotel Petaluma, Tapestry by Hilton

$ | 205 Kentucky St., Petaluma, CA, 94952, USA

Reasonable rates and vintage allure make this 1923 art deco property worth considering for budget travelers, especially those without a car (parking’s a pain) seeking a downtown location and a touch of style. The high-ceilinged, tile-floor lobby, decked out with contemporary sofas and chairs, has boutique-hotel appeal, but the rooms, furnished with less flair, are on the small side. The ground-floor Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant are excellent.

Pros

  • Downtown location
  • Some rooms have city and river views
  • Excellent Costeaux Bakery and The Shuckery seafood restaurant

Cons

  • Public spaces grander than the mostly small rooms
  • Hallway sound carries into rooms
  • Lacks parking lot (and on-street parking is difficult), fitness center, and other amenities

Hotel Villagio

$$$$ | 6481 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Guests of the southernmost of The Estate Yountville's two luxury lodgings access their rooms and suites via an olive tree–lined walkway bisected by narrow, low-slung fountains. The verdant, 22-acre resort contains restaurants, shops, and a spa. The Villagio’s streamlined furnishings, subdued color schemes, and high ceilings create a sense of spaciousness. The accommodations, all with flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars, Nespresso coffeemakers, and balconies or patios, range in size from 475 to 595 square feet, their bathrooms equipped with oversized tubs, tiled walk-in showers with rain-shower heads, or both. A few steps in opposite directions lie a pool and the 13,000-square-foot The Rendez Veuve Spa. A six-minute walk north from Villagio's clubby lobby, mature trees shade the grounds of sister hotel the Vintage House, whose room decor is similar. Tasting rooms and high-profile restaurants are within easy walking distance of both properties.

Hotel Yountville

$$$$ | 6462 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

The landscaped setting, resortlike pool area, and exclusive yet casual ambience of the Hotel Yountville attract travelers wanting to get away from it all yet still be close—but not too close—to fine dining and tasting rooms. The 14 stone-clad buildings here house clusters of chic rooms and suites painted in beige and brown shades with the occasional yellow or other accents. All rooms have large spa tubs, fieldstone fireplaces, and four-poster beds decked out in Italian linens. Given all the stonework, it shouldn't surprise that one of the treatments at the on-site spa involves heated stones; massages, body therapies, facials, and other skin-care regimens are also offered.

Pros

  • Chic rooms
  • Close to Yountville fine dining
  • High ceilings in upper-floor rooms

The Inn at Occidental

$$ | 3657 Church St., Occidental, CA, 95465, USA

Quilts, folk art, and original paintings and photographs fill this colorful inn up the hill from Occidental's shops and restaurants. An air of relaxed refinement prevails amid the whimsical antiques and fine Asian rugs in the ground-floor living room. Rooms are divided between ones in the main Victorian home and newer courtyard ones occupying a chocolate-brown board-and-batten structure behind it. Some rooms—such as Cirque du Sonoma, with a bright yellow-and-red color scheme—brim with personality; others are more sedate. Most are spacious, with private decks and jetted tubs; all are comfortable and have fireplaces. Good for families and groups, the two-bedroom Sonoma Cottage, whose decor is more straightforward contemporary than the other accommodations, sits next to the main house. Pets are allowed in the cottage and a few designated rooms for an additional fee.

Pros

  • Filling breakfast with hot entrée
  • Most rooms have private decks
  • Quiet setting

Cons

  • Not for those with minimalist tastes

Inn at Sonoma

$$ | 630 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

Little luxuries delight at this well-run inn ¼ mile south of Sonoma Plaza whose guest rooms, softly lit and done in pastels, have comfortable beds topped with feather comforters and plenty of pillows. The rooms aren’t huge, but you'd be hard-pressed to find this much charm for the price elsewhere in town. Part of the Four Sisters Inns chain of small hotels in popular vacation destinations, this property has an exceptionally gracious staff. The inn isn’t the Sonoma Plaza area’s most intimate lodging, but it feels cozy, and a full breakfast is laid out every morning.

Pros

  • Direct-booking discount through inn’s website
  • Freshly baked cookies, afternoon wine hour
  • Good soundproofing blocks out Broadway street noise

Cons

  • On a busy street rather than right on the plaza

Inn on Randolph

$$$ | 411 Randolph St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A few calm blocks from the downtown action on a nearly 1-acre lot with landscaped gardens, the Inn on Randolph—with a Gothic revival–style main house and its five guest rooms plus five historic cottages out back—is a sophisticated haven known for its gourmet gluten-free breakfasts and snacks. Well-placed splashes of color jazz up the earth tones of the plush accommodations. Seven rooms have a gas fireplace; in the main house's Hannah Moore room, named for a member of the family that owned the property for nearly a century, dark tile surrounding the fireplace spans floor to ceiling without a mantel, a striking effect. In keeping with the rest of the inn, the bathrooms, all with heated floors, are contemporary, stylish, and spick-and-span. All the cottages and two rooms in the main house have spa tubs.

Pros

  • Quiet residential neighborhood
  • Spa tubs in cottages and two main-house rooms

Inn St. Helena

$$$ | 1515 Main St., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA

A large room at this spiffed-up downtown St. Helena inn is named for author Ambrose Bierce (The Devil's Dictionary), who lived in the main Victorian structure in the early 1900s, but sensitive hospitality and modern amenities are what make a stay worth writing home about. The main home, built in 1872, contains four rooms, a cottage house nearby holds three, and there's a large loft studio with a kitchen. Some rooms are painted in soft gray tones, others in rich yellow pastels. The decor acknowledges the period but with contemporary flair, and the owner and staff aim to please.

The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection

$$$$ | 1325 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

Handsome public areas and a destination restaurant by celebrity chef Michael Mina are among the selling points of this 10-acre, two-story, Mission Revival–style resort. A mural behind the front desk and the lobby's salon-style assemblage of paintings, drawings, photos, and ceramic plates highlight Sonoma's history. Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern is the fine-dining option, and there's a smaller café for breakfast and lunch. The fitness center's off to one side; the full spa at the back of the landscaped property contains a large outdoor relaxation area. Most rooms measure just under 400 square feet, with several junior suites slightly larger. Done in muted tones, all the accommodations have pillow-top mattresses, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and small refrigerators. Most have private outdoor seating areas, some with tubs.

Pros

Maison Fleurie

$$ | 6529 Yount St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

A stay at this comfortable, reasonably priced inn, said to be the oldest hotel in the Napa Valley, places you within walking distance of Yountville's fine restaurants. Rooms at this Four Sisters Inns property are in three buildings: the main house, built as the Magnolia Hotel in 1873; the Bakery Building, thought to have housed the Magnolia's bakery for a time; and the Carriage House. These structures all share a French country style but vary dramatically in size and amenities. The most spacious rooms, in the Bakery Building and Carriage House, with private entrances, decks, and fireplaces, provide great value for their price. The five smallest ones, four Petite Queens (10x12 feet with no televisions) and the even smaller but ever-so-darling Garrett Queen (9x9 feet but with a TV), represent Yountville's best lodging bargains.

Pros

  • Smallest rooms a bargain
  • Outdoor hot tub and pool
  • Free bikes

Cons

  • Lacks amenities of a full-service hotel
  • Some rooms pick up noise from nearby Bouchon Bakery

Mount View Hotel & Spa

$$ | 1457 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Although it occupies a 1919 building designated a National Historic Landmark, the Mount View skews modern, with a cheery lobby and a boutique, slightly continental feel. Three cottages have private redwood decks and whirlpool tubs; these and the second-floor suites and junior suites, which have separate sitting areas, are more spacious than the other guest rooms. All the accommodations have flat-screen TVs, small refrigerators, safes, and Illy espresso makers. Complimentary coffee and breads are delivered to rooms each morning. The full-service True Spa and Johnny's comfort-food restaurant and sports bar operate on the first floor, and there’s a heated pool with a geothermal hot tub out back. Adjacent to the hotel in an open-air space, Robert’s Tropical Table serves Jamaican-inspired cuisine year-round, and the Moonshine outdoor theater screens classic and neoclassic Hollywood films on summer and fall weekends. Napa River Inn

$$$ | 500 Main St., Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Part of a complex of restaurants and shops, this well-appointed if not showy waterfront inn is within walking distance of downtown hot spots. Guest rooms, many with river views, are housed in three structures. Those in the 1884 Hatt Building, done in Victorian style, are arguably the most romantic, with deep-red walls, maple floors and other original architectural details, and old-fashioned slipper tubs. Brighter colors dominate in the rooms of the Plaza and Embarcadero buildings. Some rooms have fireplaces, and all have flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and USB charging ports. Expect solicitous staffers and amenities aplenty, starting with pastries from a nearby bakery delivered to your door for breakfast.

Napa Valley Lodge

$$$ | 2230 Madison St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Clean rooms in a convenient motor court–style setting draw travelers willing to pay more than at comparable lodgings in the city of Napa to be within walking distance of Yountville's tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops. The yellow exterior, Mediterranean-style roof, and vineyards that flank the property on two sides lend a touch of Tuscan grandeur, and the pool and hot tub are large and well maintained. A firepit keeps guests toasty on chilly nights. Guest rooms, done in soft whites and beiges and furnished with Nespresso coffeemakers, are in twin two-story buildings. (There's no elevator to the upper floors, so if this is an issue ask for a ground-floor accommodation.) Every room has a balcony or patio; some have views of the pool or a garden courtyard, others of grapevines.

Pros

Napa Valley Railway Inn

$$ | 6523 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Travelers, especially ones with kids, appreciate these cozy accommodations—most inside actual railcars—only steps from many of Yountville's best restaurants. The inn isn't fancy, but it's clean and well maintained, and except in high season, when rates trend up, you'll save money to spend on shopping, dining, and wine tasting. More than 100 years old, the railcars house seven long narrow rooms (an eighth room is not in a car) with a bit more style than your average motel. All have small flat-panel TVs, refrigerators, coffeemakers, and indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Double-paned windows filter out most outside noise except the sound of suitcase wheelies on the deck separating the cars. Some guests prefer the southern rooms on the east (Washington Street) side; they're the farthest away from Highway 29, about 100 yards to the west, and the Mini Model Bakery, which is on the inn's north side.

Pros

  • Prime location
  • Quaint appeal
  • Reasonable rates most of the year

Cons

  • Office is sometimes unstaffed
  • Sells out quickly in high season

Senza Hotel

$$$ | 4066 Howard La., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

Exterior fountains, gallery-quality outdoor sculptures, and rows of grapevines signal this boutique hotel's Wine Country–chic aspirations. The several-building complex, just off Highway 29 near the Oak Knoll District, is decorated in soothing shades, with haute fabrics, finishes, fixtures, and furniture throughout. Eighteen spacious rooms in two buildings have private balconies or patios, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and heated floors; all rooms have large flat-screen TVs and fireplaces. Just as modern are the renovated accommodations in the 1870 Parker House, named for the local seaman who commissioned it. Among the quietest rooms at the hotel, which is just off the highway and has some noise issues, especially outdoors, are the three in the Nook, which has vineyard views.

Silverado Resort

$$$ | 1600 Atlas Peak Rd., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

If you like your resort to feel more country club than posh bastion, you'll likely find a stay at this 1,200-acre property satisfying. Two 18-hole golf courses command much of the real estate, along with endless lawns, a full-service spa, several pools, and tennis, pickleball, and bocce courts. When not in Napa, the owners of 340 condos on the property rent them through the resort. The ones managed by the resort, which range from studios to three-bedroom suites, all with kitchens or kitchenettes, are done up in muted brown and beige shades that keep the focus on the greenery outside. All the condos are decorated smartly enough, if not glamorously, and the beds are comfortable.  Owners at Silverado are not required to rent out units through the resort (Airbnb and VRBO list some), but the ones of the 340 that do are held to standards of quality and consistency. It’s recommended to choose these.

Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 200 Stanly Crossroad, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Grapevines surround this luxury property that opened in 2022 on 96 acres carved out of the titular, eight-times-larger Carneros ranch, whose grape-growing history dates to the 19th century. The mid-vineyard lifestyle isn't priced for mere mortals—even during the slowest periods, the rooms and cottages here start at four figures—but the resort delivers a full-service (wellness sanctuary, pools, restaurants) ultrahaute-rustic experience. Oriented toward their outdoor living spaces, the 135 mod-farmhouse guest accommodations start at 400 square feet for a king with a private terrace to nearly 3,000-square-foot cottages with multiple soaking tubs and lavish patios. In addition to the resort lodgings, two types of residences—villas and vineyard homes—are available for booking when the owners are away.

Pros

  • Ultrahaute-rustic experience
  • Wellness sanctuary with pool, spa, and high- and low-tech treatments
  • Artisanal cocktails and well-conceived dishes at Bear restaurant

Cons

  • Location near San Pablo Bay can get breezy
  • 10-minute drive to downtown
  • Hefty resort fee

White House Napa

$$$ | 443 Brown St., Napa, CA, 94599, USA

Redwoods and other trees shade this three-story 1886 gingerbread Victorian that 2024 renovations transformed into a homelike contemporary inn with boutique-hotel flourishes. One smallish (223 square feet) room has a queen bed, but the rest, from 289 to around 500 square feet, are spacious, and some have high ceilings. The furniture and lighting fixtures tilt more modern upscale than period, but they've been thoughtfully selected and suit the setting. All the rooms and a suite with a separate sitting area have HDTVs, small refrigerators, and Nespresso coffeemakers. A few King Deluxe rooms have shared balconies overlooking the front garden. A buffet breakfast with a hot entrée is laid out each morning in a living-room-like space whose deck overlooks the pool, hot tub, and landscaped backyard.

Pros

  • On a residential street
  • Outdoor pool and hot tub
  • A short walk to restaurants and tasting rooms

Cons

  • No elevator to upper floors (but ADA rooms available)
  • Old-school B&B fans may miss the personal touch
  • Some housekeeping glitches

Wildhaven Sonoma

$ | 2411 Alexander Valley Rd., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA

Bay Area weekenders and tourists dabbling at the outdoor life but needing a floor, a queen bed with linens, and clean communal restrooms and showers head to this well-run “glamping” hideaway. All 40 tents have the same dimensions, and each site offers nearly the same amenities: a raised platform, covered porch, electricity, a heated mattress pad, Wi-Fi, a heater, and a fan inside, and a picnic table, firepit, and patio furniture outside. The view and proximity to the river determine the pricing. Regulars covet the row of Riverside tents (and the only four cabins, whose air-conditioning can be a godsend in summer), which have no forward views of cars or other tents. Farther from the river, the following two rows, Premium and Standard, look at the backs of other tents, though many are closer to the restrooms, showers, and communal grilling facilities. A market operates at the entrance, and the property hosts live music and wine events on some weekends.

Pros

  • Communal grilling facilities (also firepits at each site)
  • Riverside tents and property’s only four cabins for the most scenic setting
  • Access to a private Russian River Valley beach

Cons

  • Expensive on summer and early-fall weekends
  • No private baths
  • All units have heaters, but only four cabins have air-conditioning
