FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Tranquility and luxury with a low carbon footprint are among the goals of this ultragreen wood, steel, and glass resortlike property in downtown Yountville, but there's nothing spartan about the lodgings, arranged around four landscaped courtyards. Spacious rooms with private patios or balconies have high-thread-count organic bedding, gas fireplaces, and bathrooms large enough to accommodate the in-room spa treatments Bardessono is known for. About half the rooms come equipped with combination showers/steam rooms, outdoor showers, or both. High-tech touches include virtual-surround speaker systems. At the hotel's restaurant, Lucy, the chef uses mostly local ingredients, some grown in the hotel's garden, to craft the menu.

Pros

  • Rooftop lap pool with mountain views
  • In-room spa treatments
  • Three luxury villas for extra privacy

Cons

  • Expensive year-round
  • Limited view from some rooms
  • A bit of street traffic on hotel's west side

Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 755 Silverado Trail, Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA Fodor's Choice
Solage Calistoga, Calistoga
Courtesy of Solage Calistoga

The aesthetic at this 22-acre property where health and wellness are priorities is Napa Valley barn meets San Francisco loft: guest suites and studio rooms have high ceilings, sleek contemporary furniture, all-natural fabrics in soothingly muted colors, and an outdoor patio. Solage is a resort for sociable sorts who like to lounge at the bar overlooking the large pool or play a bocce game after lunch at Solbar or the poolside Picobar restaurants. In addition to a large well-equipped spa and bathhouse where you can indulge in mud-bath and other regimens, there's a packed schedule of fitness activities like yoga and Pilates. To be in the middle of the action, ask for a room facing the pool; for more seclusion, ask to be nearer the oak grove or in the most recently built studios.

Pros

  • Solbar and Picobar restaurants
  • Complimentary bikes
  • Separate pools for kids and adults

Cons

  • Scene might not suit everyone
  • Longish walk from some lodgings to spa and fitness center
  • Expensive in season

Dawn Ranch

$$ | 16467 Hwy. 116, Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

A woodsy 22-acre property positioned as a deluxe, reconnect-with-nature variation on mid-century roadside resorts, Dawn Ranch provides accommodations ranging from one-room, cedar-shingled cabins and larger "chalets" with sitting areas to cottages and a bungalow. High-quality beds, linens, and bath products signal the upscale intent, but the minimal decor and the rooms’ lack of TVs place the emphasis on unplugging and unwinding. The resort helps guests achieve this goal with grounds containing meadows, a fruit orchard, a culinary garden, and a path through redwoods, oaks, and sycamores leading down to a Russian River dock. The sandy Johnson’s Beach is a short walk away. On-site activities include yoga and meditation sessions and occasional live music on the patio below The Lodge at Dawn Ranch restaurant, whose cuisine draws inspiration from California, South America, and Europe. Several “glamping” tents are set up in the orchard from late spring to early fall.

Pros

  • High-quality beds, linens, and bath products
  • The Lodge for cuisine inspired by California, South America, and Europe
  • Emphasis on unplugging and unwinding

Cons

  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends
  • Some rooms are across the highway from the office, restaurant, and meadows
  • No TVs in rooms (but solid Wi-Fi)

Montage Healdsburg

$$$$ | 100 Montage Way, Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

Its bungalow-like guest rooms deftly layered into oak- and Cabernet-studded hills a few miles north of Healdsburg Plaza, this architectural sensation sets the standard for Sonoma County's ultraluxury game. Starting at 599 square feet—with studios and suites running from 948 to 1,178 square feet and the Guest House checking in at 4,600—the spaces are bathed in soothing whites and earth tones. Original works by local artists grace the walls, with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing heritage oaks, grapevines, and Mt. St. Helena beyond. All guest quarters have outdoor living spaces with a firepit, a daybed, lounge chairs, and a dining table. The public areas captivate all the more, especially the pool and the lead restaurant, Hazel Hill, whose semiprivate dining room juts into the oaks like a treehouse. The wow factor of the design notwithstanding, the Montage is ultimately about its setting and the opportunity to connect with nature. To ensure guests feel fully unplugged, they don't drive their vehicles at the resort but are ferried about on golf carts.

Pros

  • Vineyard views from spa, destination Hazel Hill restaurant, and swimming pool
  • Outdoor living spaces with daybeds and firepits
  • Recreational options on-property or nearby

Cons

  • Expensive year-round
  • Hefty resort fee
  • Car trip required for off-property visits

Meadowood Napa Valley

$$$$ | 900 Meadowood La., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA
Meadowood Napa Valley, St. Helena
Courtesy of Meadowood Napa Valley

This elite 250-acre resort's celebrated restaurant and more than half its accommodations were destroyed in the 2020 Glass Fire, but the spa, pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and a fair number of cottages in one part survived, with continuing reconstruction in other areas not expected to affect the guest experience. The scrupulously maintained rooms have vaulted, white, open-beam ceilings, designer furniture in shades of brown, and gas or wood fireplaces. The supremely comfortable king beds, all with down bedding, are situated to take advantage of most rooms' close-up views of the property's oaks, firs, redwoods, and other trees. Under chef Christopher Kostow, The Restaurant at Meadowood won high praise from critics and patrons and three Michelin stars. Until the restaurant returns in a few years, Forum provides meal service in a temporary (if semi-fancy) structure between the pool and the tennis courts.

Pros

  • Scrupulously maintained rooms
  • All-organic spa
  • Gracious service

Cons

  • Fire’s effects still noticeable in some areas
  • Far from downtown St. Helena
  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement

Carneros Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 4048 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 121, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A winning combination of glamour, service, and pastoral seclusion makes this resort with freestanding board-and-batten cottages the perfect getaway for active lovebirds or families and groups seeking to unwind. The several bars, a tasting room (wine and spirits flights, plus beer and nonalcoholic beverages), and restaurants on property and the Town Square's lawn games area and Pavilion open-air lounge provide numerous opportunities for socializing, but when it's time to power down, the cottages and suites deliver the utmost in privacy. Natural light floods the cottages, whose French doors lead to private gardens, some with firepits and outdoor soaking tubs. Fireplaces, ethereal beds topped with plush linens, and spacious bathrooms with heated slate floors and large indoor-outdoor showers may make it difficult to summon the will to head to the hilltop infinity swimming pool and hot tub, where the vineyard views never fail to astound. The Hilltop dining room is open to guests only, but Farm and the Boon Fly Café, both public restaurants, are popular with visitors throughout the Wine Country.

Pros

  • Cottages have lots of privacy
  • Views from hilltop pool and hot tub
  • Heaters on private patios

Cons

  • Long drive to upvalley destinations
  • Least expensive accommodations pick up highway noise
  • Pricey pretty much year-round

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

$$$$ | 100 Boyes Blvd./Hwy. 12, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

The draw at this mission-style resort is the extensive spa with its array of massages and treatments, some designed for couples. The focus on fitness and rejuvenation extends to an adjacent 7,100-yard golf course winding through trees and vineyards, a changing schedule of fitness classes, and guided hiking excursions on Fridays and weekends. Fairmont and Deluxe guest rooms aren't large (some of the former are less than 300 square feet) but are supremely comfortable; some have patios or balconies. Vineyard (500 square feet) and Mission (550 square feet) suites feel roomier and have fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Most Vineyard Suites have patios or balconies, as do some Mission ones. A few Legacy Collection one-bedroom suites range from 600 to 1,010 square feet. The chefs at the resort's Santé restaurant prepare modern American cuisine.

Pros

  • Full-service hotel
  • Enormous spa and other wellness services
  • Santé restaurant's modern American cuisine

Cons

  • Smallish standard rooms
  • Parking fee (self or valet)
  • Hefty resort fee, albeit with decent perks

Hotel Villagio

$$$$ | 6481 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

Guests of the southernmost of The Estate Yountville's two luxury lodgings access their rooms and suites via an olive tree–lined walkway bisected by narrow, low-slung fountains. The verdant, 22-acre resort contains restaurants, shops, and a spa. The Villagio’s streamlined furnishings, subdued color schemes, and high ceilings create a sense of spaciousness. The accommodations, all with flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars, Nespresso coffeemakers, and balconies or patios, range in size from 475 to 595 square feet, their bathrooms equipped with oversized tubs, tiled walk-in showers with rain-shower heads, or both. A few steps in opposite directions lie a pool and the 13,000-square-foot The Rendez Veuve Spa. A six-minute walk north from Villagio's clubby lobby, mature trees shade the grounds of sister hotel the Vintage House, whose room decor is similar. Tasting rooms and high-profile restaurants are within easy walking distance of both properties.

Pros

  • Spacious accommodations
  • Central location near restaurants and tasting rooms
  • Affiliated Vintage House nearby has 80 rooms with similar decor

Cons

  • Highway noise audible in some west-side rooms (ask for east-side upper floor)

Hotel Yountville

$$$$ | 6462 Washington St., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA

The landscaped setting, resortlike pool area, and exclusive yet casual ambience of the Hotel Yountville attract travelers wanting to get away from it all yet still be close—but not too close—to fine dining and tasting rooms. The 14 stone-clad buildings here house clusters of chic rooms and suites painted in beige and brown shades with the occasional yellow or other accents. All rooms have large spa tubs, fieldstone fireplaces, and four-poster beds decked out in Italian linens. Given all the stonework, it shouldn't surprise that one of the treatments at the on-site spa involves heated stones; massages, body therapies, facials, and other skin-care regimens are also offered.

Pros

  • Chic rooms
  • Close to Yountville fine dining
  • High ceilings in upper-floor rooms

Cons

  • Occasional service lapses unusual at this price point
  • Expensive in high season
  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends

Indian Springs Calistoga

$$$ | 1712 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Palm-studded Indian Springs—operating as a spa since 1862—ably splits the difference between laid-back and chic in accommodations that include lodge rooms, suites, cottages, stand-alone bungalows, and two houses. All are thoughtfully decorated in a simple style, with rich pastels and high-thread-count bedding. Some of the sweetest accommodations are in the View Room category; the largest sleep four easily. The cottages, most of them slightly larger, are extremely popular with regulars (book well in advance); rooms in the lodge, though small, are equally peaceful and represent good value. Playing bocce ball and hanging out on the broad lawn provide diversion when you're not indulging in volcanic-ash mud baths, soaking in the toasty Olympic-size mineral-water pool, or dining at Sam's Social Club.

Pros

  • Sprawling grounds with outdoor seating areas
  • On-site Sam's Social Club restaurant
  • Enormous mineral pool

Cons

  • Lodge rooms are small
  • Rooms have showers but no tubs
  • Minimum-stay requirement on some weekends

Silverado Resort

$$$ | 1600 Atlas Peak Rd., Napa, CA, 94558, USA

If you like your resort to feel more country club than posh bastion, you'll likely find a stay at this 1,200-acre property satisfying. Two 18-hole golf courses command much of the real estate, along with endless lawns, a full-service spa, several pools, and tennis, pickleball, and bocce courts. When not in Napa, the owners of 340 condos on the property rent them through the resort. The ones managed by the resort, which range from studios to three-bedroom suites, all with kitchens or kitchenettes, are done up in muted brown and beige shades that keep the focus on the greenery outside. All the condos are decorated smartly enough, if not glamorously, and the beds are comfortable.  Owners at Silverado are not required to rent out units through the resort (Airbnb and VRBO list some), but the ones of the 340 that do are held to standards of quality and consistency. It’s recommended to choose these.

Pros

  • Two 18-hole golf courses, several pools, and tennis, pickleball, and bocce courts
  • The Grill for fine dining, a casual café, and a market selling grab-and-go items and wood-fired pizzas
  • Full-service spa

Cons

  • Rentals through third-party sites can be problematic (it’s best to book through resort)
  • Room decor not on par with similar Napa Valley resorts (though upgrades are scheduled for 2025)
  • 10–12 minute drive to Napa and Yountville restaurants

Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 200 Stanly Crossroad, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

Grapevines surround this luxury property that opened in 2022 on 96 acres carved out of the titular, eight-times-larger Carneros ranch, whose grape-growing history dates to the 19th century. The mid-vineyard lifestyle isn't priced for mere mortals—even during the slowest periods, the rooms and cottages here start at four figures—but the resort delivers a full-service (wellness sanctuary, pools, restaurants) ultrahaute-rustic experience. Oriented toward their outdoor living spaces, the 135 mod-farmhouse guest accommodations start at 400 square feet for a king with a private terrace to nearly 3,000-square-foot cottages with multiple soaking tubs and lavish patios. In addition to the resort lodgings, two types of residences—villas and vineyard homes—are available for booking when the owners are away.

Pros

  • Artisanal cocktails and well-conceived dishes at Bear restaurant
