FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Tranquility and luxury with a low carbon footprint are among the goals of this ultragreen wood, steel, and glass resortlike property in downtown Yountville, but there's nothing spartan about the lodgings, arranged around four landscaped courtyards. Spacious rooms with private patios or balconies have high-thread-count organic bedding, gas fireplaces, and bathrooms large enough to accommodate the in-room spa treatments Bardessono is known for. About half the rooms come equipped with combination showers/steam rooms, outdoor showers, or both. High-tech touches include virtual-surround speaker systems. At the hotel's restaurant, Lucy, the chef uses mostly local ingredients, some grown in the hotel's garden, to craft the menu.

Pros

  • Rooftop lap pool with mountain views
  • In-room spa treatments
  • Three luxury villas for extra privacy

Cons

  • Expensive year-round
  • Limited view from some rooms
  • A bit of street traffic on hotel's west side

The Farmhouse Inn

$$$$ | 7871 River Rd., Forestville, CA, 95436, USA Fodor's Choice
The Farmhouse Inn, Russian River Valley
Courtesy The Farmhouse Inn and Restaurant

With a farmhouse-meets-modern-loft aesthetic, this low-key but upscale getaway with a pale-yellow exterior contains spacious rooms filled with king-size four-poster beds, whirlpool tubs, and hillside-view terraces. Larger rooms toward the back of the property are among the inn's most romantic, with an open floor plan and, in some cases, private patios or decks accessed through wide French doors. Several rooms have double-sided fireplaces facing both the room and patio. The smoothly efficient service, concierges to help guests with touring and wine tasting, and dining options—The Restaurant at Farmhouse Inn (prix-fixe dinner-only tasting menus) and Farmstand (casual lunch and dinner)—qualify the inn for top-tier status among Sonoma County luxury properties. But this place offers something extra the others can't match: the deep sense of the county and its rhythms that sister-and-brother part-owners Catherine and Joe Bartolomei share as fifth-generation residents. Although their inn deserves its many press and online plaudits, the sublime experience most guests describe comes not from Farmhouse living up to the hype (though it largely does) but from the unstudied elegance and the staff's attention to detail.

Pros

  • On-site Farmhouse Inn Restaurant (fine dining) and Farmstand (casual)
  • Luxury bath products
  • Full-service spa

Cons

  • Far from nightlife
  • Least-expensive rooms are small (if nicely appointed) and don’t have patios
  • Pricey, especially during high season

Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection

$$$$ | 755 Silverado Trail, Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA Fodor's Choice
Solage Calistoga, Calistoga
Courtesy of Solage Calistoga

The aesthetic at this 22-acre property where health and wellness are priorities is Napa Valley barn meets San Francisco loft: guest suites and studio rooms have high ceilings, sleek contemporary furniture, all-natural fabrics in soothingly muted colors, and an outdoor patio. Solage is a resort for sociable sorts who like to lounge at the bar overlooking the large pool or play a bocce game after lunch at Solbar or the poolside Picobar restaurants. In addition to a large well-equipped spa and bathhouse where you can indulge in mud-bath and other regimens, there's a packed schedule of fitness activities like yoga and Pilates. To be in the middle of the action, ask for a room facing the pool; for more seclusion, ask to be nearer the oak grove or in the most recently built studios.

Pros

  • Solbar and Picobar restaurants
  • Complimentary bikes
  • Separate pools for kids and adults

Cons

  • Scene might not suit everyone
  • Longish walk from some lodgings to spa and fitness center

The Francis House

$$$$ | 1403 Myrtle St., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in 1886 of locally quarried tufa, then abandoned for half a century but gloriously restored, the Second Empire–style Francis House is now a luxury inn that evokes the past but feels utterly contemporary. Second-floor rooms have higher ceilings than the third-floor ones, though at nine feet the latter hardly feel claustrophobic. In one of many clever touches throughout the inn, the architect angled the third floor's interior walls to mimic the mansard style outside, lending the rooms the feel of a Parisian atelier. Although their marble bathrooms are similar, each guest room is decorated individually with elegant simplicity.

Pros

  • Ultra-chic style
  • Extraordinary breakfasts
  • Pool and lawn area in back

Cons

  • Pricey, if less costly than the plushest nearby resorts
  • More for romantic getaways (no children under 16)
  • Rooms are small (198–207 square feet)

Lavender Inn

$$$$ | 2020 Webber Ave., Yountville, CA, 94599, USA Fodor's Choice

Travelers looking for personalized service from innkeepers who take the trouble to learn guests' names and preferences will enjoy this intimate inn just off Yountville's main drag. Two rooms are in the historic main house, built in the 1850s and moved to this site in the 1860s. The upstairs room is spacious, and the downstairs one, though smaller, has a private, shielded outdoor hot tub. Six courtyard rooms in newer buildings each have private patio entrances; two of these rooms also have private jetted outdoor tubs. An old barn on the property was converted into a loft suite. Each room has a private sitting area, and during summer the outdoor lavender courtyard that gives the inn its name provides a tranquil escape. Lavender, a Four Sisters Inns property, bills itself as a French country inn. Though you may not feel transported to Provence or Bordeaux, the palette of soft rich yellows and the rustic furnishings provide sufficiently Gallic echoes.

Pros

  • On-site free bikes
  • Use of pool at nearby sister property
  • Personalized service

Cons

  • Hard to book in high season
  • Lacks amenities of larger properties
  • Not sceney enough for some guests

Montage Healdsburg

$$$$ | 100 Montage Way, Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

Its bungalow-like guest rooms deftly layered into oak- and Cabernet-studded hills a few miles north of Healdsburg Plaza, this architectural sensation sets the standard for Sonoma County's ultraluxury game. Starting at 599 square feet—with studios and suites running from 948 to 1,178 square feet and the Guest House checking in at 4,600—the spaces are bathed in soothing whites and earth tones. Original works by local artists grace the walls, with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing heritage oaks, grapevines, and Mt. St. Helena beyond. All guest quarters have outdoor living spaces with a firepit, a daybed, lounge chairs, and a dining table. The public areas captivate all the more, especially the pool and the lead restaurant, Hazel Hill, whose semiprivate dining room juts into the oaks like a treehouse. The wow factor of the design notwithstanding, the Montage is ultimately about its setting and the opportunity to connect with nature. To ensure guests feel fully unplugged, they don't drive their vehicles at the resort but are ferried about on golf carts.

SingleThread Farm Inn

$$$$ | 131 North St., Healdsburg, CA, 95448, USA Fodor's Choice

A remarkable Relais & Châteaux property a block north of Healdsburg Plaza, SingleThread is the creation of husband-and-wife team Kyle and Katina Connaughton, who operate the ground-floor destination restaurant and the four guest rooms and a suite above it. Influencing the couple's approach at both is the Japanese concept of omotenashi, often translated as "selfless hospitality." All the accommodations have gas fireplaces, 14-foot exposed redwood-beamed ceilings, and wet bars with European coffeemakers and tea kettles. Heated tile floors, roomy rain showers, marble-trimmed deep soaking tubs (except in one room), and automated Japanese toilets (heated seat, of course) count among the luxurious touches in the spacious bathrooms, done mostly in calming whites and off-whites. Meadowood Napa Valley

$$$$ | 900 Meadowood La., St. Helena, CA, 94574, USA
Meadowood Napa Valley, St. Helena
Courtesy of Meadowood Napa Valley

This elite 250-acre resort's celebrated restaurant and more than half its accommodations were destroyed in the 2020 Glass Fire, but the spa, pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and a fair number of cottages in one part survived, with continuing reconstruction in other areas not expected to affect the guest experience. The scrupulously maintained rooms have vaulted, white, open-beam ceilings, designer furniture in shades of brown, and gas or wood fireplaces. The supremely comfortable king beds, all with down bedding, are situated to take advantage of most rooms' close-up views of the property's oaks, firs, redwoods, and other trees. Under chef Christopher Kostow, The Restaurant at Meadowood won high praise from critics and patrons and three Michelin stars. Until the restaurant returns in a few years, Forum provides meal service in a temporary (if semi-fancy) structure between the pool and the tennis courts.

Pros

  • Scrupulously maintained rooms
  • All-organic spa
  • Gracious service

Carneros Resort and Spa

$$$$ | 4048 Sonoma Hwy./Hwy. 121, Napa, CA, 94559, USA

A winning combination of glamour, service, and pastoral seclusion makes this resort with freestanding board-and-batten cottages the perfect getaway for active lovebirds or families and groups seeking to unwind. The several bars, a tasting room (wine and spirits flights, plus beer and nonalcoholic beverages), and restaurants on property and the Town Square's lawn games area and Pavilion open-air lounge provide numerous opportunities for socializing, but when it's time to power down, the cottages and suites deliver the utmost in privacy. Natural light floods the cottages, whose French doors lead to private gardens, some with firepits and outdoor soaking tubs. Fireplaces, ethereal beds topped with plush linens, and spacious bathrooms with heated slate floors and large indoor-outdoor showers may make it difficult to summon the will to head to the hilltop infinity swimming pool and hot tub, where the vineyard views never fail to astound. The Hilltop dining room is open to guests only, but Farm and the Boon Fly Café, both public restaurants, are popular with visitors throughout the Wine Country.

Pros

  • Cottages have lots of privacy
  • Views from hilltop pool and hot tub
  • Heaters on private patios

Cons

  • Long drive to upvalley destinations
  • Least expensive accommodations pick up highway noise

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa

$$$$ | 100 Boyes Blvd./Hwy. 12, Sonoma, CA, 95476, USA

The draw at this mission-style resort is the extensive spa with its array of massages and treatments, some designed for couples. The focus on fitness and rejuvenation extends to an adjacent 7,100-yard golf course winding through trees and vineyards, a changing schedule of fitness classes, and guided hiking excursions on Fridays and weekends. Fairmont and Deluxe guest rooms aren't large (some of the former are less than 300 square feet) but are supremely comfortable; some have patios or balconies. Vineyard (500 square feet) and Mission (550 square feet) suites feel roomier and have fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Most Vineyard Suites have patios or balconies, as do some Mission ones. The landscaped setting, resortlike pool area, and exclusive yet casual ambience of the Hotel Yountville attract travelers wanting to get away from it all yet still be close—but not too close—to fine dining and tasting rooms. All rooms have large spa tubs, fieldstone fireplaces, and four-poster beds decked out in Italian linens. Handsome public areas and a destination restaurant by celebrity chef Michael Mina are among the selling points of this 10-acre, two-story, Mission Revival–style resort. Mina's Wit & Wisdom Tavern is the fine-dining option, and there's a smaller café for breakfast and lunch. Grapevines surround this luxury property that opened in 2022 on 96 acres carved out of the titular, eight-times-larger Carneros ranch, whose grape-growing history dates to the 19th century. The mid-vineyard lifestyle isn't priced for mere mortals—even during the slowest periods, the rooms and cottages here start at four figures—but the resort delivers a full-service (wellness sanctuary, pools, restaurants) ultrahaute-rustic experience. Oriented toward their outdoor living spaces, the 135 mod-farmhouse guest accommodations start at 400 square feet for a king with a private terrace to nearly 3,000-square-foot cottages with multiple soaking tubs and lavish patios. In addition to the resort lodgings, two types of residences—villas and vineyard homes—are available for booking when the owners are away.
