98 Best Places to Shop in Los Angeles, California

Background Illustration for Shopping

Los Angeles's close association to the rich and famous has long made it a major shopping destination, but in recent years the city has grown beyond just a locale for luxe clothing and accessories—although high-end goods will always be a cornerstone of L.A.'s retail scene. With a wealth of stellar vintage spots, purveyors of affordable on-the-pulse products, and an ever-growing number shops selling local, artisanal goods, there is truly something for every type of spender here.

No matter what it is you're shopping for, L.A.'s consistently sunny and warm weather also means you can often hunt for wares in the open air, whether it be at a flea market full of hidden treasures, or a street lined with boutiques to explore. As you stroll, good eateries are never too far away, and you can always find somewhere delicious to dine and covertly star-watch.

If in fact you are in the celebrity-studded city to catch a glimpse of a famous face or two, you may want to start at their mecca, Beverly Hills, where a bevy of major designers' outposts and impeccably curated stores cater to upcale clientele.

After getting your fix there, you can hop into your car and absorb the city’s other varied offerings, including down-and-dirty bargains in Downtown, dozens of well-designed boutiques lining Venice's famed Abbot Kinney Boulevard, or mint-condition vintage fashions in Los Feliz.

Featuring an impressive number of local makers and designers, the boutique also sells modern, minimalist clothing and has a kids' section that will wow even the hippest moms and dads.

Gold Bug

You'll see the works of more than 100 artists, including sculptures, animal specimens, crystals, and other unique oddities for the eccentric giftees on your list, inside this family-owned boutique located just behind bustling Colorado Boulevard. But the main draw here is the jewelry. Funky, whimsical finds like earrings crafted from Kennedy half-dollars are stocked alongside more minimalist pieces, all of which are created by independent designers.

Magnolia Park Shopping District

Burbank

Melrose Avenue might be Los Angeles’s most well-known vintage shopping destination, but Burbank’s Magnolia Park Merchants shopping district gives it a run for its money. Spanning several blocks on Magnolia Boulevard with some stores on scattered side streets, this revitalized area of independent boutiques, self-care purveyors, cafés, and eateries has a small-town feel and easy parking that Melrose lacks. It's heavy on well-stocked vintage, thrift, and antiques shops—Junk For Joy, Best of Times Antiques, Studio Hope, The Holding Company, Chance Vintage, Yes Baby! (which has a secret arcade in back), The Blue Pig, Hive & Hanger (owned by a beekeeper out to educate the public), and Playclothes Vintage.

But there's also an occult apothecary (The Crooked Path), vinyl vendor (Run Out Groove Records), a sourdough bakery (Random Acts of Breadness), a collection of comic books and pop culture collectables (Blast From The Past), jewelers (Stay Home Friend), a horror and paranormal museum/oddities gift shop/bookstore/goth clothing boutique (The Mystic Museum), a throwback video store that holds screenings (Be Kind Video), and a plant nursery (Tansy). There's even a vintage and makers' mall with a cat-themed section and adoptable kittens in the window (Catnip Coalition).

Malibu Country Mart

Stop by this outdoor outpost for the ultimate Malibu lifestyle experience: browse on-trend clothing (Náti, American Vintage, or Madison) and eclectic California housewares and gifts (Malibu Colony Co.), pick up body-boosting wellness goodies (SunLife Organics), and finish the day off with dinner at long-standing eatery Tra di Noi, reputed to be a favorite of Barbra Streisand. If you can squeeze in a workout, there are multiple studios to choose from, plus tarot readings at metaphysical outpost Malibu Shaman. Then reward yourself for your good health habits by stopping at K Chocolatier by Diane Krön for some of her famed truffles, derived from a Hungarian family recipe.

MedMen

West Hollywood

The legalization of marijuana in California has led to an explosion of cannabis shops around Los Angeles. One of the most reputable is MedMen, a more refined dispensary that traffics in high-quality buds in a very welcoming environment. Here you can find edibles, vaporizers, concentrates, topical ointments, and more cannabis-laced products. A cannabis shop with a cause, MedMen is also actively involved in criminal justice reform.

Midcenturyla

The idea of going to Los Angeles to buy furniture may sound nuts, but it'd be crazier to miss this curated collection of vintage seating, dining sets, and storage pieces sourced across Europe through a network built by Midcenturyla's owners over 20 years in the business. The current showroom obsession is all things '60s–'80s French and Italian from names like Cassina, B&B Italia, and Roche Bobois.

Mohawk General Store

Pick up the wares of local favorites as well as internationally loved labels like Acne Studios, Issey Miyake, and Levi's. Neiman Marcus

This couture salon frequently trots out designer trunk shows, and most locals go right to the shoe department, which features high-end footwear favorites like Giuseppe Zanotti and Christian Louboutin. A café on the third floor keeps your blood sugar high during multiple wardrobe changes, while a bar on the fourth is for celebrating those perfect finds with a glass of champagne.

Ovation Hollywood

Hollywood

If you're on the hunt for unique boutiques, look elsewhere. However, if you prefer the biggest retail chains America has to offer, Ovation Hollywood is a great spot for a shopping spree. Beauty and sports stores, and the official Dodgers Clubhouse filled with team apparel, are in the mix. Sadly, the original courtyard that pays tribute to the city's film legacy is no longer there, replaced by a more modern space, but if you head to the north-facing balconies, you will find a picture-perfect view of the Hollywood sign. Heads up that this place is a huge tourist magnet.

Pasadena City College Flea Market

For bargain hunting, or if you can't make it to the Rose Bowl's market, head to the Pasadena City College Flea Market on the first Sunday of each month (except January) starting at 8 am. With 400+ vendors, this is a great source for antiques, collectibles, furniture, and clothing at prices that won't break the bank. It's also one of the best places to find rare and collectible records in Southern California. Admission is free and parking is $2 at the adjacent structure.

Paul Smith

West Hollywood

This minimalist pink store houses Paul Smith's collection of clothing, boots, hats, luggage, and objets d'art. The clothing here has playful British preppy style, with vibrant colors and whimsical patterns mixed in with well-tailored closet staples.
