Over a dozen new properties have broken ground in L.A.'s heart, most notably the first American outpost of Mama Shelter and the upscale Dream Hollywood Hotel, while nearby, those with deep pockets will go gaga over the city's most buzzed about openings—The James West Hollywood and the deluxe Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

If you have cash to spend, you'll find plenty of luxurious options in this edition. Nearly every major upscale hotel has a new look today, with the Mondrian, The London West Hollywood, Mosaic Hotel, and the Four Seasons at Beverly Hills leading the pack. Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

A complete makeover in 2025 gave the already stylish W’s ultra-comfortable rooms a polished look with hardwood flooring, marble bathrooms, designer lighting, and curved couches. The curves begin in the lobby under a massive abstract chandelier of mirrored circles. Curved tufted velvet couches fill the retro-styled, sunken conversation pit. The horseshoe-shaped lobby bar overlooks both the luxe seating area and the greenery-filled patio; when the weather is fine, accordion doors open to the outside. On the roof, the pool deck sports two bars and the most luxurious poolside cabanas in Hollywood. Workout in the extra-large gym complete with Pelotons, free weights and other spiffy equipment. Upper floor rooms can face the Pantages Theatre’s historic neon-lit facade, the Capitol Records building, the famed hills and all the way to downtown. The bedside, mini-Marshall amp blue tooth speaker, along with a full bar, lets guests set their own vibe.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The art-deco design of this Pendry hotel exudes contemporary luxury from the moment you drive into the circular drive. The artwork is exquisite, including a steel and glass Portal Icosahedron sculpture by Anthony James. The Hollywood Roosevelt

$$ | 7000 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90028, USA Fodor's Choice
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The historic, party-centric Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, known for hosting the first Academy Awards ceremony, has played host to some of the movie industry's most important people and events, but, it's also approachable enough for regular folks looking to experience Los Angeles. Though its rooms were recently renovated to keep them fresh, they still boast hints of the Old Hollywood era, keeping it connected to its roots. Meanwhile, the lobby's original Spanish Colonial Revival details that evoke early Hollywood glamour, including the Spanish tiles, painted ceilings, arches, and fountains, remain and are beautifully preserved. Stay in a poolside cabana room if you want to stay close to the heated, David Hockney--painted pool, or get a room at the tower if you want to be away from the poolside parties. Modern amenities include a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and a minibar, though on-site restaurants Shirley Brasserie and 25 Degrees will keep you well fed. Seeking nightlife? No need to leave the property with a scenic lobby bar and popular Spare Room bar (with bowling lanes) just downstairs.

Pros

  • Refreshed rooms
  • Pool is a popular weekend hangout
  • Several bars and a showroom

Cons

  • Reports of noise and staff attitude
  • Stiff parking fees ($70)
  • Busy location

This Valley cool kid—a 7-acre hideaway that lures locals and out-of-towners with a stellar restaurant, fun bars, fabulous retro flair, and too many amenities and programming to list—comes with Hollywood pedigree as it was originally opened by '70s TV mom Beverly Garland and her husband in 1973. Prefer something more casual? The Living Room has couches, live entertainment, and spectacular sunset views. Or you can dine beachside at Coast and watch the world go by. The cozy lobby evokes a New England getaway, with a fireplace and tall windows opening out to the Pacific Ocean. Guest rooms have those namesake shutter doors, pillow-top mattresses, small balconies, and built-in cabinets filled with art books and curios. Bathrooms are luxe, each with a deep whirlpool tub, a raft of bath goodies, and a three-nozzle, glass-walled shower. But if you want a more immersive experience, there's also the ONE spa and fitness center. Check out the picture-perfect cabanas in the ocean-view pool area. A $55 daily resort fee includes a welcome drink, daily yoga on the beach, bicycle rentals, a beach concierge, a house car, and more.

It has spacious, modern, airy rooms (somewhat of a rarity in Venice) and a local-favorite rooftop bar and lounge (appropriately named High). The small garden allows for a peaceful hideaway in the middle of the city. Ayres Hotel

$ | 14400 Hindry Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90250, USA

The rates may be relatively modest, but the style here is grand, with the hotel resembling a stone-clad château. But don't let that "French countryside" feel fool you: it's close to the 405 and in close proximity to LAX, Inglewood entertainment venues, and the beaches. Inside you'll find tapestries, high ceilings, oil paintings, and formal furniture—not the typical casual beachy look. The kitchen facilities in the pet-friendly guest rooms are a thoughtful plus. The on-site restaurant, Polanco Mexican Steakhouse, keeps guests satiated.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Very pet friendly with facilities
  • Solid on-site restaurant

Cons

  • Requires a drive to the ocean
  • Not in the most centrally located neighborhood to other L.A. sights
  • Rooms could use an update

Bayside Hotel

$$ | 2001 Ocean Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90405, USA

Tucked snugly into a narrow corner lot, the supremely casual Bayside's greatest asset is its prime spot directly across from the beach, within walkable blocks from the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier. Expect no frills but a decent value. Beachy-hued rooms are well maintained and feature tiled floors, powerful showers, and a TV. Some include a private patio or balcony, and there's also a shared lounge area outdoors. Access is via stairs and an exterior walkway. There's a small front office instead of a lobby. Drivers must negotiate a cramped lot and then pay $36 a night for parking. Request a room with unobstructed ocean views and balconies. Book early for summer weekends; the hotel typically sells out then.

Pros

  • Cheaper weeknight stays
  • Beach access and views
  • Some rooms with kitchens and balconies

Cons

  • No lobby and expensive parking
  • Basic bedding
  • Thin walls and street noise
