Fodor's Expert Review The Line
3515 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California 90010, United States See on Map
Unlike a lot of places in LA, this hotel doesn't have to try to be cool. It just is cool. With food by LA chef Roy Choi, design by Sean Knibb, and a nightlife scene curated by the uber-creative Houston Brothers, this hotel hotspot has created a community in the heart of Koreatown. Creative types in the worlds of art, fashion, and design flock to this hotel to hang in the lobby, chill by the pool, eat under the stars or just take in the amazing views.
room
Floor-to-ceiling windows give visitors unbeatable views of the Hollywood Hills, while concrete walls, modern design touches and oversized desks provide the perfect space for creative workers to get things done.
All the rooms come with very fast (and free) Wi-Fi.
bathroom
The bathrooms have small design touches like oval mirrors and brass fittings. Some of the larger suites feature standalone tubs. Most bathrooms sport shower/tub combos and are equipped with California-based Baxter bath products.
lobby
In a hotel that’s built around community, the lobby amplifies that reputation. Because of an impressive amount of sitting space, a great lobby bar, free Wi-Fi and a café, guests and locals use the hotel as a work and meeting space on a regular basis. The ceilings and walls are lined with old T-shirts and rotating art installations. The lobby is always busy at night with people drinking, eating and just hanging out.
Always check the LINE’s calendar of events. You never know when there will be art shows, workshops or live music throughout the hotel--but you will when you check the calendar!
pool
The guests-only pool is home to a variety of events, pop-ups and weekly DJ nights in the summer. On sunny days, the pool is packed with a young crowd.
gym
The fitness center is open 24-hours and has great window views of the busy streets below.
Every Saturday at 10 am, there’s a free hip-hop yoga class that’s open to the public. Also on Saturdays, at 10:30 am, the Koreatown Run Club meets at the hotel and sponsors runs around the neighborhood.
dining
Commissary is the main restaurant in the hotel featuring Cali-cuisine inside a lush greenhouse by the pool. The indoor/outdoor space is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and gives customers envelopes with pea seeds inside to start growing at home, whether or not they want or ask for this. Pot Lobby Bar has a variety of unique Korean/American finger foods curated by Roy Choi, while Pot Café--also by Choi--dishes out rice bowls, pastries and incredible coffee.
drinking
There’s always something happening inside the hotel. The octagon-styled lobby bar has a very long happy hour and DJs spinning on weekends. In the back of the hotel is the entrance to Breakroom 86, an 80s-themed speakeasy fashioned by the Houston Brothers that includes karaoke, arcade games, live music and a boozy ice cream truck.
YOU SHOULD KNOW It’s not always easy to get into Breakroom 86. Make sure to tell the hotel you’re interested in drinking there and they should be able to help you out (but there are no guarantees you’ll get in).
gardens
There’s an incredible amount of meeting and event space in the hotel, and around corners you can find gardened off patios, long communal sitting areas, ping-pong and foosball tables--you just have to know where to look.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Koreatown is very walkable and there are dozens of restaurants, bars, retail and more right around the hotel. The Wilshire/Normandie Train Station is across the street from the hotel and you can take the train to downtown, Hollywood, Universal Studios and even the beach. Cabs and Uber or Lyft rides are very easy to get in this part of town.
Restaurants
It may have a long line, but The Boiling Crab (4-minute walk) is the best crab-house in LA and worth the wait. For something incredibly inventive with tiki drinks and Asian-fusion cuisine, try Here’s Looking At You (10-minute walk). Obviously, you want to know the best Korean BBQ in the area, and that’s at Kobawoo Restaurant (13-minute walk).
WHY WE LIKE IT
Effortlessly cool, this community-driven hotspot gives its young and creative guests everything they could ask for: great dining options, nightlife, interesting culture, a pool and endless activities. Whether you want to get fit with free yoga, or toughen up your mind with lobby-shop Poketo’s art workshops and art installations, there’s something for everyone. The hotel opens its doors to the neighborhood for people to work, play and mingle any day and any time.
