Fodor's Expert Review
There are surprisingly few hotels in Malibu, and the Malibu Beach Inn is by far the swankiest and most romantic. Nestled against Carbon Beach, the hotel is a retreat for amorous couples but also a family friendly abode with a high level of service and no shortage of pizazz. With unbeatable ocean views, a chic restaurant, and access to the wonders of Malibu, this hotel is the perfect getaway for any occasion.
Tip The hotel takes full advantage of its beachside location. The staff provides guests with beach chairs, a full food & beverage menu, and games for kids like cornhole or footballs to throw around.

Every room in the hotel comes with billion-dollar views, roaring fireplaces, and sleek wood floors. The Scandinavian chic design creates a minimalist feel, knowing that the real show is out the window. Free coffee and tea comes standard and turn down service brings Vosges chocolates.
Shower-only beige-tiled bathrooms are equipped with Bamford products and large, white double sinks. Fans of the Toto toilet with its myriad bum-washing features will rejoice.
There isn’t much of lobby as you enter the hotel you’ll find yourself inside the bar/restaurant and immediately to the deck in back with sweeping views of the Pacific.
The hotel partners with Veronica Skin & Body Care, which is just down the street. Everything from massages to facials to yoga on the beach is available.
Carbon Beach Club is the hotel’s signature restaurant and features seasonal treats that lean towards the sea-faring variety. The outdoor patio is arguably one of the most romantic spots in LA for dinner.
Tip The hotel partners with Malibu Wines with an exclusive package that includes gourmet lunch, a bottle of Saddlerock Sparkling Brut Champagne, and a round trip ride through the Santa Monica Mountains.
The bar at Carbon Beach Club opens at 4pm and features a Sunset Hour with drink specials as well as a late night happy hour. Sipping amongst the crashing waves is a delight.
You’ll probably want to rent a car if you decide to stay in Malibu--just know that parking will run you $35 a night. Walking in the area is incredibly safe and you can usually find an Uber or Lyft ride when you need it. But Malibu is spread out, and getting back into LA is a trek, so plan accordingly. Ideally located, the hotel is walking distance to the Malibu Pier, numerous restaurants, and shops. Mind the traffic on the Pacific Coast Highway as people drive like maniacs. The good news is that you’re literally on the beach and can walk the entire coastline and dream about purchasing the multi-million dollar houses you amble by.
Another remarkably romantic beachside spot is the ever-famous Nobu Malibu (4-minute walk) with inventive sushi dishes you won’t find anywhere else (except for other Nobu restaurants). Alternatively, head to the Malibu Country Mart (3-minute drive) where you’ll find everything from Lemonade (a cute chain café) to Tra di Noi (an exceptional Italian restaurant).
For drinks, check out Duke’s Malibu (5-minute drive) with excellent fish tacos and cold brews with ocean front views. Further east along the coast is Moonshadows Malibu (6-minute drive) with its Blue Lounge featuring live music, DJs, and craft cocktails while looking over the water.
