Though small, both of these communities on the Steese Highway loom large for those interested in history and nature. Central got its start in 1894 as a roadhouse called Central House. Mining remains a way of life here, with small private operations peppering the landscape. Claim jumpers definitely are not welcome. The Yukon River town of Circle is one of two entry points into the Yukon–Charley Rivers National Preserve.
