Sleek, supple leather clothing and bags from the Québec designer Frédéric Mamarbachi have a cult following from Antwerp to Tokyo. The rough-hewn wood floors and concrete walls of this branch give it an industrial-chic vibe.

Maison Margan

A portmanteau of the words Morocco and oil of argan, Margan's argan-oil-based skin care products are made in Québec with natural and organic ingredients that are sustainably sourced and prepared without animal cruelty. The pretty boutique in dusty rose tones envelops you in its intoxicating Moroccan-inspired fragrances the moment you walk in. With a sink built into its rose marble island counter, you'll want to test out the new brand's rich serums in different scents, luscious creams, and gorgeous soap bars in the same hue as the décor. Margan also makes scented candles, perfect for accompanying your bath ritual.

Marché Atwater

Heading down avenue Atwater toward Lachine Canal, you can't miss the art deco tower of Atwater Market. This is the best spot to pick up local produce, fresh flowers, and gourmet meats and cheeses. In summer, bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic by the canal or have a drink at the Canal Lounge, a café and bar on a barge. During the winter holidays there is now the added bonus of an outdoor Christmas market.

Marché Public de Sept-Îles

In summer, local farmers and food producers offer fresh goods at this tented, open-air market at the Parc du Vieux-Quai. Chanterelle mushrooms, zucchini flowers, blueberries, small-production jams, ready-to-eat sweets, and cooking demonstrations make up just a small part of the delicious array. The place is a dreamland for photographers. The colors are amazing and the local farmers are friendly.

Mimi & Coco

You'll want to snap up several of the locally designed T-shirts at Mimi & Coco, perhaps pairing them with luxe knitwear from Italy. Beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows create a bright, inviting interior, even on cloudy days. The shop also sells dog collars and leashes, with profits going to a nonprofit foundation that works to promote animal rescue and adoption. Come at lunchtime and sample one of Mandy's gourmet salads from the in-store counter.

Papeterie Saint-Gilles

This paper factory produces handcrafted stationery using a 17th-century process. There's also a small museum, which explains through photographs and demonstrations how paper is manufactured the old-fashioned way. Slivers of wood and flower petals are pressed into the paper sheets, which are as thick as the covers of a paperback book. The finished products—made into writing paper, greeting cards, and one-page poems or quotations—make beautiful, if pricey, gifts. Visitors can wander through the museum for free, and guided tours can be arranged for groups.

Paul's Boutique

Paul's Boutique, owned by none other than the eponymous and eccentric Paul, is an Aladdin's cave of 20,000-plus rare and used records, with a strong emphasis on hip-hop and vintage 45s. The shop also stocks old DVDs, magazines, and music memorabilia. Housed in a colonial Québec home with dormer windows that's painted canary yellow and fire-engine red—and appears to be caving into itself—it's hard to miss Paul's Boutique.

Place de Ville

Thirty-nine stores provide a day of one-stop shopping for everything from groceries to gifts. A major supermarket and two major Canadian department stores are here. Also find shops that specialize in books, luggage, sporting goods, natural health and beauty, and kitchen supplies. The ATM, cell phone spots, and hair salons are handy.

Marché Bonsecours

Old Montréal

The silver-domed Marché Bonsecours, the city's main public market in the 1800s, has been restored and renovated with a modern edge. The 15 boutiques inside sell First Nations artwork, Quebecois designer fashions, jewelry, kitchenware, and more. The paintings of Michel Sylvain on display at Art et Antiquités Médius capture eloquent Montréal street scenes. Soak it all up over a cup of coffee from Le Café des Arts or a full meal and an artisinal beer at Pub BreWskey.
