An island that's world famous for its mussels and renowned for its rich soil is certainly not going to disappoint when it comes to eating out. From humble mom-and-pop spots and creative cafés that give classic dishes a contemporary twist, to splurge-worthy bastions of gourmet dining, there is no shortage of places to eat on Prince Edward Island. In Charlottetown especially (where innovative options like Terre Rouge Bistro Marche are being added to the mix) the restaurant scene is booming. The ambience tends to be casual across the board, and reservations are seldom necessary—though at popular waterfront fish shacks, you may be in for a lengthy lineup.
Avonlea Village may be all about Anne of Green Gables, but the branch of Samuel’s Coffee House in this historic setting is all about good coffee and house-made treats such as muffins, scones, soups, salads, and a delectable raspberry cream cheese pie.
Everything is made in-house at this artsy converted space inside a handsome 1895 building, with locally sourced and organic ingredients creating the tasty house-made soups, sandwiches, and panini. Tempting sweet treats and baked goods are also available. It's become a popular gathering place for discerning locals and visitors.
Housed in a gorgeous heritage building, with plush velvet booths, exposed brick, and chandeliers, Sims Corner serves decadent meals and prides itself on its connections with local farmers and custom-cut, Island-raised beef (it's aged 45 days for richer taste). Seafood selections start with a wide range of oysters at the raw bar, and divine desserts are made in-house. All can be washed down with an award-winning selection of old- and new-world wines.
Sharing a pretty house with a Buddhist prayer hall, this little eatery serves vegetarian and vegan fare with Asian flair. Aside from the expected noodles, dumplings, and stir-fries, Splendid Essence has a fine selection of hot and cold teas, which you can enjoy outdoors on the porch in fine weather.
This lovely café in nearby Tyne Valley—where the tea is served in vintage china cups—serves up fantastic breakfasts and lunches, including dishes such as lobster eggs Benedict, and offers their truly delightful four-course "Fancy Afternoon Tea" for C$58. It's a bit of a drive, but worth it, and there's plenty of pretty scenery en route.
There's a fantastic view from this chef-owned waterfront spot, especially if you choose to sit out on the deck, and the food is attractively presented, too, featuring plenty of the bounty from the ocean—think seared scallop and lobster risotto, an amazing seafood tasting board, or seafood and chorizo pasta—but plenty of land-based dishes and interesting vegetarian options.
