Downtown and ICE District
Downtown Edmonton has a long history starting in 1830 when Hudson’s Bay Company built the fifth iteration of Fort Edmonton on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River. The town grew to the east of the fort, with the commercial hub centered on Jasper Avenue and 97th Street. Over the last century, the city’s business district has expanded out in every direction, creating the vibrant Downtown that visitors and locals enjoy today. The ICE District, the largest mixed-use sports and entertainment district in Canada, includes several venues, including Rogers Place and the ICE District Plaza, that host live concerts and myriad other events. With a unique medley of office towers and government buildings, hotels and restaurants, theaters and libraries, plazas, and arenas, Edmonton's Downtown can keep you busy for at least a day or three.
