Fodor's Expert Review Zamas

Carretera Tulum–Boca Paila, Km 5,, Tulum, Quintana Roo 77780, Mexico See on Map

Good old-fashioned off the beaten track hotel, where guests can actually disconnect from the modern world. A group of huts and bungalows scattered around the beach or the jungle, but always under the refreshing shade of coconut trees. Just like in the old days before the mega-resorts and its glitzy style took over the world.

room

Each cabaña is unique in its own style, but they all share a freshness-without-air-conditioning atmosphere. The rooms are clean with wooden doors and windows, white cotton curtains and mosquito nets around the beds, while the thatched roofs and the hammocks add to the off-grid feeling to the place.

bathroom

The bathrooms are clean, simple and colorful. They have all that’s needed, but not much else. Colored tiles and rough adobe-like walls make for an interesting contrast though.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Some showers have half a wall as door, some don’t even that; so if you are a shy person who cherishes privacy while taking a shower, make sure to check what kind of bathroom you’ll get in your cabaña.

lobby

A welcoming space that let guests know the kind of place they have arrived, an unpretentious, charming and laid back hotel where nature takes center stage. Rustic furniture and palapa roofs set the tone and style in Zamas.

pool

A small, rectangular, turquoise-colored pool that manages to be cute, even when it has not much to offer in terms of space or activities.

There are two freshwater cenotes on the property grounds. For a different kind of splash, you may want to try swimming in one of these sacred underground rivers.

spa

There is not a proper Spa in the hotel, but you can get a variety of Spa-services. Sometimes an outdoor massage by the beach beats all the sophistication of the best Spas.

dining

The restaurant at Zamas is famous in the area. They offer simple dishes like ‘huevos rancheros’ with gourmet touches that transform an apparent conventional cuisine in something quite interesting. The atmosphere is relaxed and the ocean views are stunning, especially at sunset.

drinking

The Bloody Marias are the cocktail of the house, make sure to try them, they are bloody good… (Sorry, I couldn’t resist it!).

LOCATION

Getting Around

An hour away from Cancun’s International Airport, Zamas is just a 10-minute drive from the Tulum’s world-famous ruins. There is a road that will take you from the hotel to the ruins without even having to pass through the town. If you don’t rent a car, the best way to move in the Tulum area are taxis.

Restaurants

Piedra Escondida (6-minute walk) is a good place, if similar in style to the Zamas restaurant; it offers a fusion of Italian and Mexican cuisines. Puro Corazón (4-minute walk) serves traditional Mexican food in a family-friendly atmosphere. For fine dining on a tree house, you should try the Kin Toh (10-minute walk) with avant-garde Mayan-Mexican cuisine (adults only).

Bars

Ciel Rose (4-minute walk) is a rooftop bar where drinks and music is always funky. Enjoy a good mezcal and get free snacks at La Joyita Mezcaleria (4-minute walk).

WHY WE LIKE IT

Zamas is one of the first beachfront hotels in Tulum. It’s small and colorful. The whole place has a feeling of authenticity. It may not offer a lot of luxuries, but it succeeds in making guests feel welcomed.
