Chiapa de Corzo has been designated one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos (“magical towns”), communities of significant heritage. It has a lot more personality than neighboring Tuxtla Gutiérrez. (It’s closer to the airport, too.) Diego de Mazariegos founded the town in 1528, but fled the lowland heat one month later and settled what would become San Cristóbal de las Casas.
