Fodor's Expert Review Riu Palace Las Américas
Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 8.5, Cancún, Quintana Roo, 77500, Mexico
The most upscale of Cancún's four Riu properties, this colossal eight-story resort at the north end of the Zona is visually stunning. Unlike the modern, minimalist resorts that dot the strip, the decoration here is a bit baroque; there are towering columns and cupolas in the lobby, and even the most basic guest rooms (all are suites) have ornate mahogany furniture and patterned bedding. All also have a walk-in closet, sitting room, and four-bottle liquor dispenser. The property has six restaurants, four of which require reservations. At a resort that mainly attracts guests over 40, the boisterous emcee directing poolside games can get a bit annoying.
PROS
- spacious suites
- access to sister properties in Cancún and Playa del Carmen
CONS
- small pools and tiny beach
- not much sun by the pool or beach by late afternoon
- some rooms smell musty
