Restaurante El Delfin

$$

Trujillo families pile around the long wood tables right on the sand as unobtrusive tropical music plays throughout the restaurant. The kitchen serves traditional seafood dishes like shrimp, lobster, and conch, as well as a variety of fried chicken options. The liquor list is the longest in town. A shower is available for diners coming in off the beach.

Rincón Danlidense

$

Nothing fancy here: you'll be seated at plastic tables and partake of good Honduran home cooking. Anafre, Honduras's ubiquitous bean dip, is a good starter, and tacos catrachos (Honduran-style tacos made with a corn-based filling) make a tasty main course. The place branches out into hamburgers and enchiladas, too. People come here from far and wide on weekends for the delicious beef soup.

Sabor Cubano

$$$ | Col. Palmira

Just as much a nightspot as Cuban restaurant, this old standby is immensely popular with the capital's Cuban community. Island recipes such as ropa vieja—the translation, "old clothes," may sound unappetizing, but it's really shredded flank steak in tomato sauce—are standard fare here. The full bar's selection of daiquiris, Cuba libres (rum and Coke), and mimosas will transport you back to Old Havana. There's live music and dancing on the back patio weekend nights, and if you'd like to wow your friends back home with a few moves, the place offers salsa lessons on Tuesday evenings.

Sushi

$$ | Barrio Independencia

A glowing reputation around town for great fare precedes this aptly named sushi joint. Weathered-tile floors and wire chairs serve as a simple backdrop to the chef's small sushi stand, where he doles out such unique creations as the Tegucigalpa roll, with shrimp, cream cheese, breaded avocado, and eel sauce. The Mimos roll adds local lobster to lettuce, avocado, and soybean leaf. The restaurant is somewhat hidden off the street but faces the Pizza Hut at the UniPlaza mall and is caddy-corner to the Hospital D'Antonio.

Tre Fratelli

$$$ | Col. Palmira

A lot of Italian eateries around the world go by the name Tre Fratelli (three brothers), and while this restaurant in the Plaza Criolla on Boulevard Morazán is part of a small Central America-California chain to boot, its atmosphere is warm and unchainlike. There are inside seating and a popular patio dining area. Generous servings of pasta, tasty fish dishes, a good wine selection, and pleasant salads at accessible prices—along with the obligatory checkered tablecloths—have made this place a tremendous hit with travelers and locals alike.

Twisted Tanya's

$$$

An eclectic open-air dining room on the second floor makes Twisted Tanya's great for a romantic dinner or a special occasion. There's usually a prix-fixe menu, with several selections for the main course. Even if you already know what you want, the waitstaff enjoy holding up the menu board and describing each item to you with a flair.

Villa Real

$$

This is the best restaurant in the city. Tables are set in a pretty, overgrown garden beside a trickling fountain. Enjoy the hint of a breeze as you sample pechuga marsala (chicken breast with vegetables). The plato típico is also quite satisfying. Ask the manager to show you around the historic building.

Vintage Pearl Restaurant & Wine Cellar

$$$$ | West Bay

Gourmet dinners and an extensive wine collection give this eatery an elegant advantage in an area dominated by resort buffets. The menu changes daily based on season and local availability, but almost always features a beef, fish, pork, chicken, and vegetarian dish. The cellar has more than 50 international wines, including featured favorites from California. Cool off inside the mahogany wood cabin, surrounded by sea-grape trees, or enjoy the breeze outside on the waterfront deck.

Weekends Pizza

$

A Honduran-German couple operates this friendly pizza joint. They make thick-crust pizza with fresh organic ingredients grown on their farm outside of town and herbs cultivated out on the restaurant patio. Italian, vegetarian, and Hawaiian pizzas are expected, but for something different, try the Copaneca, an offering made with a topping of sausage, avocado, fried beans, and cilantro. Sandwiches, salads, calzones, and lasagna are on the menu, too, if pizza doesn't interest you. No alcohol is served. The place opens at 9 am; although there is no breakfast per se, you can stop in for the freshly baked bread these folks make in the morning.

Wraps + Art

$ | West End
A tiny shop with a casual atmosphere, Wraps + Art proves true to its name by offering affordable and healthy wraps amid local art. There are plenty of gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options, and the owner even tucks handwritten notes with inspirational messages into every take-out bag. Art classes are sporadically offered in the evenings, accompanied by wine and wraps.
