Hotel El Velero

$$ | Playa Hermosa, 50503, Costa Rica

This laid-back hotel is right on the beach, and, though nothing fancy, it has comfortable rooms and is an excellent option if you're watching your expenses. The palm-shaded, open-air bar and restaurant is often hopping with local expats and visitors exchanging fishing, boating, and real estate stories. Rooms have tropical decor with terra-cotta tiles, bamboo furniture, and large windows. Those on the second floor are nicer, with high, sloping wooden ceilings. Only two rooms (Nos. 211 and 212) have ocean views, but you're likely to spend plenty of your time in one of the many chairs and hammocks overlooking the beach—some are a shell's toss from the surf at high tide. The hotel runs daily snorkeling and sunset cruises on its own handsome 38-foot sailboat. In the restaurant, jumbo shrimp and always-fresh mahimahi are fixtures. Come on Wednesday or Saturday for beach barbecues. Drinks are two-for-one every day during happy hour, 4 to 6 pm.

Pros

  • On the beach
  • Affordable
  • Friendly
  • Informal

Cons

  • Tiny pool
  • Most rooms lack views
  • Some rooms are dark and boxy
  • Flies can be a distraction at outdoor areas

Hotel Giada

$$ | Main strip, Sámara, 50205, Costa Rica

This eco-conscious hotel in the heart of town has two small swimming pools surrounded by greenery and brilliant bougainvillea, which gives the property a Mediterranean look. The terraces of the back rooms overlook a curvaceous blue pool surrounded by tropical plants; newer rooms with terraces look out onto the other turquoise pool in a grassy space with lounge chairs. The quietest rooms are Nos. 15 to 19, because they don't get any road noise. The rooms have light bamboo furniture, Guatemalan wall hangings, and hand-painted bathroom tiles. The hotel's Italian restaurant is one of the best in town. The main drawback here is noise from the restaurant and the street, which is why roadside rooms should be avoided; ask for a room overlooking the second pool. A small breakfast is included in the room rate and hungrier guests can order more from a menu.

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • Friendly staff
  • Hair dryers in rooms

Cons

  • Not right on the beach
  • Smallish rooms
  • Street noise can affect some rooms

Hotel Gran Gavilán del Sarapiquí Lodge

$ | Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, 41001, Costa Rica

In 2020, a group of Spanish friends purchased this little paradise where beautiful gardens run down to the river; they added a pool, free tai chi classes, and a menu blending Spanish and Costa Rican dishes. Colorful tanagers and three types of toucan feast in the citrus trees on the grounds of this two-story lodge, where comfortable rooms with terra-cotta floors are nicely accented with decorative crafts. Prime activities are horseback jungle treks, boat trips up the Sarapiquí River, and bird-watching—more than 100 species have been spotted here.

Pros

  • Lovely gardens
  • Many activities
  • Great for birders

Cons

  • Rustic rooms

Hotel Guanacaste Lodge

$ | Flamingo, Costa Rica

On the outskirts of Flamingo, a short drive from the beach, this Tico-run lodge offers basic accommodations for a fraction of what the town's big hotels charge. Ten simple, attached bungalows have high beamed ceilings, wood furniture, walk-in closets, flat-screen TVs, and spacious bathrooms. Each room has a picture window looking out onto a garden that holds the pool, a thatch shelter, and a cascading fountain. Included in the rate is a typical Costa Rican breakfast served poolside, and there's a small restaurant next door serving lunch and dinner. The lodge is well maintained and comfortable, but the staff speak minimal English, so plan to practice your Spanish.

Hotel Hojarascas

$ | Avda. 8, Cs. 4–6, Heredia, Costa Rica

The entrance here resembles any other storefront downtown, and you could pass right by without noticing this quiet, family-run gem. Although smack-dab in the middle of Heredia’s central business district, the property extends back 70 meters and provides peace and quiet you’d never expect to find here. Rooms have blindingly white walls and tile floors, which keep things bright—windows face the long, skylighted hallways rather than outdoors. All contain armoires and colorful spreads. A substantial breakfast, served in the upstairs dining room, fortifies you for a day of sightseeing.

Pros

  • Good value for what is offered
  • Attentive owner
  • Great service

Cons

  • Can hear a bit of noise from the hallway

Hotel La Diosa

$$ | Cahuita, 70403, Costa Rica

Brightly painted stone or wood cabins, all with functional bamboo furnishings and air-conditioning, are scattered around the beachfront garden grounds at this place on the far north end of Playa Grande. The pool is large, clean, and shows off a seaside view, the surrounding patio stocked with lounge chairs and encircled by palms and blooming tropical plants. The grounds are abundant with wildlife like sloths, toucans, and frogs. All cabins have bright furnishings and art posters decorating the walls, and rooms #1 and #4 even come with whirlpool tubs. The owners' interest in Eastern religions is evidenced in the hotel's name (la diosa means "goddess") and there are little touches such as the rounding of corners and cachá-wood rails to "enhance feminine energy." A bridge connects the pool to the beach, and a private trail leads to shaded, sandy-bottomed natural pools that are open to the public but most easily accessed from the hotel’s property. The breakfast costs an additional $6 plus tax.

Pros

  • Private access to natural pools
  • Air conditioning in all rooms
  • Beautiful pool area

Cons

  • Far from sights
  • Breakfast not included
  • Car required to get around

Hotel La Rosa de América

$$ | Calle La Rosa, Alajuela, 20103, Costa Rica

This small hotel tucked off the road to La Garita is a simple and relaxed place to unwind, with its owners adding welcoming energy and personalized touches to the place. There are six buildings, most divided into two units, arranged around the pool and gardens. The white-wall rooms are simple, but it's a quiet place to sleep. Calling ahead for directions is a good idea, but once you're here, you'll have easy access to nearby restaurants and the Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center. The hotel offers occasional online-only specials.

Pros

  • Great for families
  • Helpful owners
  • Close to a number of family-friendly restaurants

Cons

Hotel Lagarta Lodge

$$$$ | Top of hill at north end of Nosara, Nosara, 50206, Costa Rica

A birders' and nature-lovers' Valhalla, this magnificent nature lodge on a promontory has amazing views of the forest, river, and coast north of Nosara. The lodge's private nature reserve is directly below, down a steep path that takes you through a forest and an eerily beautiful mangrove swamp, with fantastical stilt roots and snap-crackling sound effects from respiring mollusks. More than 270 bird species have been spotted here, including long-tailed manakins. The trail ends at the river and out to Playa Pelada and surfing waves. The hotel was built with a focus on sustainability, with spacious suites with garden showers and sliding-glass doors leading out to large terraces with either forest, ocean, or river views. The restaurant offers a menu focused on fresh fish and seafood, such as skewered prawns with bacon, and poached fish with a lemon sauce. There is also a romantic cocktail Sunset Bar and a poolside bar overlooking the reserve. The breakfast is delicious, with Costa Rican classics and fresh breads and homemade jams and espresso. Proximity to the adjacent nature reserve, Reserva Biológica, means you'll have plenty of tour options including jungle treks, turtle-and-birdwatching tours, eboat excursions, evening hikes, and more. Rooms are void of TVs but boast strong Internet.

Pros

  • Amazing views and grounds
  • Four pool areas
  • Family rooms sleep six

Cons

  • Not on the beach but shuttle departs every two hours

Hotel Las Tortugas

$$ | Playa Grande, Costa Rica

With a prime location on the beach, this place is perfect for surfers, nature lovers, and sun worshippers with a range of budgets. The name, which means "the turtles," is no accident; this hotel was designed with turtles in mind. Owner-conservationist Louis Wilson made sure that room and restaurant lights don't shine on the beach, because light disorients the turtles. Rooms are spacious, with good beds, stone floors, terraces, balconies, and colorful tile bathrooms. Las Tortugas accommodates all budgets, with options ranging from spacious suites to economical dorm-style rooms in an annex at the back of the grounds, which we don't recommend unless you want to rough it. They also offer an array of apartments up the hill, some with kitchenettes, that rent by the night, week, or month. All of this adds up to the best value in Playa Grande, and one of the best deals on the Pacific coast. The main surf break is just to the south of the hotel, and turtle tours start at the ranger station next door. Rip currents are a danger on the beach here, which is why many guests prefer the pool shaped like a leatherback turtle (the turtle's head is the kiddie pool). A palm-lined entrance and lush gardens slung with hammocks round out the grounds' appeal. The restaurant serves a good selection of fresh seafood and grilled meat dishes; a beach snack bar has Caribbean-style food and tacos.

Pros

  • On the beach
  • Friendly owners
  • Good value

Cons

  • Spotty service at times

Hotel Los Mangos

$$ | Near entrance to waterfall trail, ½ km (¼ mile) south of town, Montezuma, 60111, Costa Rica

The rhythmic sounds of the nearby ocean make these affordable octagonal wood bungalows spread across a shady, green mango grove the perfect place to practice yoga or just relax. Hammocks and traditional tico rocking chairs furnish the wraparound decks on each cozy cabin. Ceiling and floor fans, plus screened windows and a high conical roof, help keep them cool. Less attractive, though cheaper ($35–$75), are rooms in the two-story orange-and-blue building by the road. Here you’ll find verandas and rocking chairs facing the sea. Four of the second-floor rooms share baths, for less than half the price. The large, secluded, scenic pool with a waterfall overlooks the ocean. Memorable daily yoga classes ($14) are given in a huge, covered open-air pavilion. One-hour yoga classes are held on Friday at 6:30 (by donation).

Pros

  • Great pool
  • Lots of wildlife
  • Yoga

Cons

Hotel Macao Beach

$$ | Sámara, 50205, Costa Rica

Opened in 2022, this beachfront hotel gave Samara the boutique boost it needed with a courtyard setting offering a bit of intimacy, yet close enough to the Costa Rican action. After a day in the surf, the outdoor shower and small pool are a great way to wash away the salt, or you can lounge in the sand on the private day beds. In bustling Samara, the security and parking are a welcomed bonus, as is the large breakfast included in the reasonable room rate. Although basic, most rooms have a/c and Wi-Fi, and even a full kitchen when booking one of the two apartments.

Pros

Hotel Mango Moon Villa

$$$ | Between La Mariposa and Makanda, Manuel Antonio, 60601, Costa Rica

The rooms vary in size and amenities, but the intimate atmosphere and hospitable staff make you feel as if you're staying with a friend rather than at a hotel. The comfy, open living-room area extends to a balcony lined with a wooden counter and stools with views of the mango-shape pool below and a tranquil cove framed by the rain forest. More expensive rooms have semiprivate balconies, and those on the top floor can connect for families. Monkey-attracting mango trees surround the building, and a steep 20-minute trail leads to a secluded beach. Every Tuesday there is live music at sunset in the restaurant.

A few blocks from the beach, this family-focused property boasts three swimming pools, equipped kitchens, and comfortable rooms of varying size and style. Bright, pastel-hued standard rooms have two queen-size beds and most have kitchenettes; top-floor rooms have a small living room with checkered sofas and a double bed; the cozy split-level rooms with kitchenettes and stone walls are reminiscent of European bed-and-breakfasts. The Dutch owner is dedicated to cleanliness and provides lots of amenities, such as poolside grills, a kids' game room, a large open-air reading lounge, and inexpensive tours. Hotel Playa Negra

$$ | Playa Negra, Costa Rica

Pastel-color, round cabinas are sprinkled across sunny lawns strewn with tropical plants at this gorgeous oceanfront place with a huge round pool. Each bungalow has curvy tile bathrooms plus built-in, molded-concrete sofas with soft cushions that can double as extra beds. There's no air-conditioning in three of the rooms, but conical thatch roofs keep the cabinas cool. The larger suite-bungalows do have air-conditioning, as well as a king-size bed and two singles, plus a refrigerators, coffeemaker, and a large wooden deck with hammocks. Ocean tidal pools, swimming holes, and rock reefs provide plenty of opportunities for lazy afternoon exploration. This is great for surfers, with a surf shop and good break right in front of the hotel. The round restaurant serves typical food with a few Continental dishes under a giant thatch roof. Hotel staff can arrange canopy and horseback tours. Surf packages are also available. During rainy season, it is highly recommended to have 4WD to reach this property.

Hotel Presidente

$$ | Avda. Ctl., C. 7, San José, 10101, Costa Rica

A largely American clientele looking for all the downtown hubbub enjoys the medium-price business-class accommodations here. The presidente referred to here is John F. Kennedy, who walked by during his 1963 visit as the hotel was under construction. Each of the comfortable rooms has one double and one single bed. The rooftop terrace, Azotea Calle 7, serves as a calm oasis and a great place to stop by for a drink. The Presidente has spearheaded efforts to encourage other San José lodgings to follow its lead in reducing their environmental footprint—not bad for a hotel located smack-dab in the center of the city.

Pros

$$$ | Corner of C. Madrigal and Avda. Pastor Díaz, Jacó, Costa Rica

On the quiet southern end of Jacó beach, this property is clean and comfortable and just far enough from town to offer a peaceful night of sleep. Although it has a beachfront location, the poor layout means most rooms face a hallway or parking lot, with only a few on the second floor catching a glimpse of the water. Fortunately the ocean views from the pool and restaurant compensate for the architectural blunder. Rooms lack character but have everything you need for a pleasant stay, including flat-screen TVs, strong air-conditioning, coffeemakers, Wi-Fi, and nice showers. Simple meals at the tiki bar are served under a thatched roof and range from red snapper and stuffed chicken to pasta and burritos. This small bay-side hotel overlooking the beach and almost hidden behind flowering hedges is the most comfortable and reasonably priced place to stay in the village of Drake. There are economic rooms—all featuring a/c and private baths with hot showers—that open onto an elevated, shared terrace with bay views and breezes. But there's a price for those views: 185 steps to climb. All the rooms have tiled floors. Guests get to leave their artistic signatures on painted driftwood mobiles that decorate the open-air restaurant where breakfast (included) and day-long meals are served. Rooms are all super-luxurious, with oversize bathtubs, sumptuous sage-and-cream linens, and private terraces with ceiling fans and removable screens. There's free daily yoga, complimentary sunset cocktails,  a 24-hour fitness center; the 18-hole, 72-par Hacienda Pinilla golf course; and an exquisite full-service spa with 19 massage huts. There's also a kids' club for families. The on-site restaurants, including a handsome, ranch-style Costa Rican steak house and a more intimate Asian restaurant, are gorgeous, but the prices are sky-high and the food quality inconsistent. Although the beach in front of the hotel is small and rocky, you can take a short walk over to Playa Avellanas. There's a daily shuttle van to Tamarindo's shops and restaurants ($25), and if you have your own car, you can drive the short distance to Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas for less pricey meals.

Pros

  • Luxurious
  • Largest infinity pool in Central America
  • Equestrian center

Cons

  • Very pricey
  • Beach is rocky
  • Ground-level rooms facing walkways get outside noise

Kap's Place

$ | C. 19, Avdas. 11–13, San José, 10101, Costa Rica

The owners of this multibuilding lodging are committed to maintaining a family atmosphere, and you'll be guaranteed peace and quiet during your stay here. The place literally sprawls: one of the three annexes is almost two blocks away from the main building. (And if you drive by too quickly, you might miss the main building.) Inside are bright and tropical but basic rooms with lots of tile and wood; coffee and tea are brewing all the time in the reception area, and you can use the shared kitchen. You'll be asked to sign a two-page agreement when you register, attesting that you'll keep the noise down and won't bring unregistered guests to your room.

Pros

  • Good budget value
  • Quiet atmosphere
  • Good place to meet other budget travelers

Cons

  • Far from sights
  • Small rooms
  • You can pay with a credit card if you stay in the main building, but not in one of the annexes

Kenaki Lodge

$ | Playa Grande, Cahuita, 70403, Costa Rica

The hardwood rooms and bungalows at this serene lodge may not have air conditioning, but the vaulted, screened ceilings and fans keep the rooms cool in the evenings, the open windows letting in fresh air and the nocturnal sounds of the jungle. Colorful decor brightens the bedrooms, which are clustered together around the house where guests have access to a shared kitchen and dining area where the optional breakfast is served. Fresh fruit is hung around the terrace, attracting a medley of birds for up-close observation. Manicured gardens surround the rooms and bungalows, and the property has access to a trail leading directly onto Playa Grande. Two bungalows tucked away in the gardens offer more privacy, and the least expensive of them is not that much more than the price of the rooms, although the rate does not include breakfast. Perfect for a long-term stay, the bungalows have tiled floors, a dining area, and a fully equipped kitchen; the largest contains two bedrooms and sleeps four. The grounds have a strong, reliable fiberoptic internet connection for remote workers, and the hotel staff are a great resource for finding and booking tours with knowledgeable operators that offer fair rates.

Pros

  • Quiet seclusion
  • The grounds have a strong, reliable fiberoptic Wi-Fi connection
  • Assistance with booking tours with reputable operators

Cons

  • Far from town and sights
  • Group events may create commotion in dining area
  • Bungalows usually booked long term

Four octagonal wood bungalows are scattered around the secluded wooded property, with its wonderfully cool surroundings (no air-conditioning is needed). Half of each structure is given over to the room itself with screen door, large windows, ceiling fan, and bright bathrooms with basin sinks. A comfy porch with a hammock for relaxing takes up the other half. In the center of it all sits a pleasant thatch-roof lounge area, and the sounds of monkeys, toucans, and iguanas can be heard throughout the property.

Pros

  • Lush, green setting
  • Attentive service
  • Great rates for offerings

Cons

  • Can be difficult to find
  • Dogs on-site, so not a place to stay if you dislike canines
