THE BEST HOTEL IN TURKEY

D-Resort Göcek

$$$$ | Göcek, 48310, Türkiye

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This centrally located hotel has a gorgeous private beach and the comfort and excellent service you'd expect from a luxury resort. Some rooms have walk-out access to the pool across the lawn—few, however, have a real sea view or much of any view for that matter. The hotel's main selling point is its private, manicured beach, a five-minute ride on one of the golf carts or bicycles available at the main building. Note that the hotel allows non-hotel guests to access the beach for a fee during quieter periods.

Pros

  • Central, but still feels secluded
  • Some rooms have four-poster beds
  • Sleek facilities throughout including spa and hammam

Cons

  • Very pricey
  • Rooms are pleasant but unexceptional
  • Beach a five-minute commute by buggy or bicycle

THE BEST HOTEL IN TURKEY

Ece Saray & Resort

$$$$ | Karagözler, Fethiye, Türkiye

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Part of the Ece Marina complex, this upscale option has a lovely harbor-front location, so all of its large, tasteful rooms, with their Ottoman-inspired decorative accents, have full sea views. The pool, fitness center, and health spa are impressive, too. The plaster-stone façade has crumbled in places, but otherwise the hotel is a solid choice.

Pros

  • Right on the water
  • Bright, large sea-view rooms
  • Expansive grounds and pool area

Cons

  • In need of some modernization
  • Not in the center of town
  • Coming in and out of the hotel by car can be a little hairy

THE BEST HOTEL IN TURKEY

Hotel Su

$$$$ | Dumlupınar Blv. No. 205, Antalya, 07980, Türkiye

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This space-age, boxy, all-white mother ship of a design hotel on Konyaaltı Beach is popular with the weekend crowd from Istanbul. Everything is well designed and run to exacting standards, though the nightclub aesthetic won't be to everyone's taste—think huge disco balls hanging from the soaring lobby ceiling, and minimalist, all-white rooms with large mirrors.

Pros

  • Ultra-modern atmosphere
  • Two pools, one outdoor and one indoor
  • Five on-site restaurants

Cons

  • Rooms are large but sterile-feeling
  • Hosts lots of meetings and big events
  • On the expensive side

THE BEST HOTEL IN TURKEY

Meri Hotel

$$$$ | Ölüdeniz Cad., Ölüdeniz, 48300, Türkiye

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The first hotel to set up shop (in 1973) on the famed Ölüdeniz lagoon has a delightful location on a steep incline amid terraced gardens overlooking one of Turkey's most beautiful bays. Public spaces, including a pretty pool area, are the main draw, and the lagoon beach is just across the road from the main hotel. Although most have large balconies with superb sea views, rooms are smaller and more down-at-the-heel than you'd expect based for the price, and reaching many of them involves riding a rickety funicular lift or climbing lots of stairs.

Pros

  • Location, location, location
  • Most rooms have balconies with gorgeous sea views
  • Private beach on the famous (and crowded) lagoon

Cons

  • Average, dated rooms
  • Daunting stairs
  • Can be noisy

THE BEST HOTEL IN TURKEY

Yalıkavak Marina Beach Hotel by Social Living Collection

$$$$ | Çökertme Cad. 6, Yalikavak, 48990, Türkiye

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

All of the large, attractive suites are designed in an opulent luxurious style, face the water, and have their own sundecks with lounge chairs. A lengthy pool is the centerpiece of the large sun terrace where breakfast and all-day snacks and beverages are served. A small private manicured beach with sunbeds and umbrellas completes the outdoor facilities. A variety of upscale eating options are just steps away in the award-winning marina itself. The same company also operates the METT Bodrum resort just outside Bodrum town.

Pros

  • Beautiful waterfront setting
  • Attractive beach and beach club
  • Comfortable, spacious rooms

Cons

  • Beach club music can be loud
  • Rooms can get hot and stuffy due to sun exposure
  • High bar prices

Argos in Cappadocia

$$$$ | Aşağı Mah. Kayabaşı Sok. 23, Üçhisar, 50240, Türkiye Fodor's Choice
Argos in Cappadocia, Uçhisar
Courtesy of Argos in Cappadocia

Exceptional service, a spectacular location, and accommodations that meld sophisticated yet understated contemporary design with lovely local touches make Argos one of Cappadocia's best hotels. Public spaces—including a lounge, an excavated concert space, and the excellent Seki Restaurant—utilize the area's natural materials and feature impeccable design details. Rooms, some in caves and some in restored mansions, are distributed over several buildings amid well-tended gardens. Most have fireplaces, and some have a terrace or balcony (none have TVs). "Splendid" category suites even have small private pools. The property is centrally located for experiencing Cappadocia, but leave yourself a day or two just to enjoy the hotel. Be sure to tour the on-site wine cellar (Turkey's largest).

Pros

  • Inviting public spaces
  • First-rate service
  • Magnificent views over Pigeon Valley

Cons

  • You won't want to leave

Dersaadet Hotel Istanbul

$$ | Küçükayasofya Cad. Kapıağası Sok. 5, Istanbul, 34400, Türkiye Fodor's Choice
Dersaadet Hotel, Sultanahmet
Deluxe Room

Dersaadet means "place of happiness" in Ottoman Turkish, and this small, family-run, cozy hotel lives up to its name—rooms have an elegant, even plush, feel, with colorful rugs, antique furniture, and ceilings hand-painted with traditional motifs. Upper-level rooms have views, while a cozy indoor and outdoor roof terrace looks out to the sea; breakfast is served here while classical or jazz music plays in the background. Thoughtful touches include complimentary snacks for guests in the lobby, but what really makes Dersaadet so special is that the Duryar family run the place with great professionalism and enthusiasm, ensuring that staffers are just as welcoming.

Pros

  • Extraordinary level of service
  • Lovely terrace
  • Good value

Cons

  • Some rooms are on the small side

The emphasis at this delightful, family-run bed-and-breakfast is on guest satisfaction, and the eight rooms in the restored wooden house are decorated with thoughtful attention to detail, like lovely Ottoman-Victorian-style wallpaper, upholstery, and linens; wooden floors and ceilings; and old-fashioned furniture. Tile-lined bathrooms feel fresh and modern; a couple have showers with exterior-facing stained-glass windows. A large roof terrace, where breakfast is served, has excellent views.

Pros

  • Good value
  • On a quiet street

Pera Palace Hotel

$$$$ | Meşrutiyet Cad. 52, Istanbul, 34430, Türkiye Fodor's Choice
Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah, Beyoglu

Extensive restoration has brought this Istanbul landmark—founded in 1892 to provide upscale accommodations for travelers arriving on the Orient Express—back to its former glory, with beautifully outfitted rooms, plenty of period decorations, and antique furniture. Bathrooms are done in Carrera marble, and some feature deep, old-fashioned claw-foot tubs; there's also a small underground spa, sauna, and indoor pool. Some rooms and suites are inspired by prestigious former guests, including Agatha Christie, Greta Garbo, and Ernest Hemingway, while the "deluxe Golden Horn" rooms, many with tiny private balconies, are some of the coziest.

Pros

  • Historic venue
  • Luxurious facilities
  • Attentive staff

Cons

  • Some rooms have small bathrooms

Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul

$$$$ | Çırağan Cad. 32, Istanbul, 34349, Türkiye Fodor's Choice
Çiragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, Bosphorus
Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul

Once a residence for the Ottoman sultans, the late-19th-century Çırağan Palace (pronounced chi-rahn) is Istanbul's most luxurious hotel, with ornate public spaces that feel absolutely decadent and a breathtaking setting right on the Bosphorus—the outdoor infinity pool seems to hover on the water's edge and most rooms, full of Ottoman-inspired wood furnishings and textiles in warm colors, have balconies overlooking the Bosphorus as well. Large bathrooms feature marble tubs. At Tuğra Restaurant, you can dine in splendor on Turkish and Ottoman specialties. Most lodgings are in the new wing, though there are 11 VIP suites in the palace itself, including the €50,000 per night Sultan's Suite—start saving now.

Pros

  • Over-the-top feeling of luxury
  • Infinity pool

Serinn House

$$$ | Esbelli Sok. 36, Ürgüp, 50400, Türkiye Fodor's Choice
Serinn House, Ürgüp
Murat Gulyaz

Sleek wood, designer furniture, sheepskin rugs on stone floors, and glass-enclosed showers give these cave accommodations looking onto a plant-heavy courtyard a true contemporary flair. They are also a welcome departure from the traditional local style that characterizes most Cappadocian lodgings. But despite the hip design, a relaxed and intimate atmosphere prevails—thanks in large part to owner Eren Serpen, who goes out of her way to make guests feel comfortable. A delicious breakfast with tasty home-baked pastries is served on the upstairs terrace.

Pros

  • Sophisticated yet unpretentious
  • Highly personal service

Hera Hotel

$$$ | Tabak Köprü Cad. 21, Bergama, 35700, Türkiye Fodor's Choice

Bergama's most attractive lodging is a favorite with couples on romantic retreats as well as visiting archaeologists, and all are made equally welcome by multilingual owner Mehibe, a font of local information. The two, beautifully maintained, 200-year-old stone houses are hidden among the cobbled, winding lanes of the crumbling Talatpaşa neighborhood, on the slopes of the Acropolis-crowned hill. Well-appointed rooms, each named after a Greek god or goddess, surround a courtyard and have high ceilings and old-fashioned furniture. Breakfast is served on a lovely terrace with views of the town, and wine tastings are occasionally held in the atmospheric wine cellar.

Pros

  • Serene location
  • Beautiful rooms
  • Good hospitality

Cons

  • Neighborhood can be noisy at night
  • Hotel reached on steep, narrow road
  • Bathrooms a little dated

Hich Hotel Konya

$$ | Celal Sok. 6, Konya, Türkiye Fodor's Choice

Konya’s first true boutique hotel occupies a pair of nicely restored 19th-century houses across from the Mevlâna Museum. From the distressed wood floors and colorful handmade patchwork rugs to the contemporary metal desks and chairs, the attractive digs have a traditional-meets-urbane design aesthetic. Bathrooms are modern, and in-room perks include iPod docks and complimentary dried fruit and nuts. Front rooms overlook a lovely garden patio and have views of the mausoleum; back ones face the surrounding neighborhood. No children under 10 are allowed.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Refreshing, memorable room design
  • Exceptional service

Cons

  • Limited indoor public spaces
  • Ground-floor rooms can be noisy
  • Some rooms can feel a little cramped
