When Swiss architect Pia Smith was tasked with refurbishing the Hotel Apolo, the first hotel on the Playa del Inglés, she reached for the sledgehammer. Walls were torn down to turn 115 rooms into 67, angular vertical shutters were added to the exterior, and public areas were imbued with zen-inspiring Southeast Asian decor. Today the hotel interiors have Philippe Starck furniture, Balinese beds, and tablet-controlled lights and thermostats; outdoors, there's a botanical garden with 200 tropical species and a water therapy zone with Finnish saunas and ice showers.
