Fodor's Expert Review Kinloch Lodge

Off A851, Isleornsay, Highland, IV43 8QY, Scotland Fodor's Choice

An upmarket hotel with an equally upmarket restaurant, Kinloch Lodge peacefully overlooks the tidal Loch na Dal. The historic buildings date from the 17th century, while the newer South House has the best views, built from the ground up with comfort and relaxation in mind. You're welcomed into the hotel by the friendly staff with a glass of champagne, before being shown to a guest room decorated with antiques, fine fabrics, and quilted bedspreads. The rooms also offer lovely views over the water, the hills, or the grounds. The dining room, where gold-framed portraits of brooding Macdonald ancestors line all four walls—look out for the two boys in traditional Highland dress, one holding a golf club and the other a hunting rifle—offers excellent food prepared by the hotel's owner, Lady Claire Macdonald, a well-known cooking writer, and head chef Marcello Tully.
