Apart from the main London–Edinburgh line, the Borders had no train service until 2015, when the rail link from Edinburgh to Tweedbank began service. The Borders Railway website has information about using it to explore the area. In the Southwest, trains headed from London's Euston to Glasgow stop at Carlisle, just south of the border, and some also stop at Lockerbie. Trains between Glasgow and Carlisle stop at Gretna Green, Annan, and Dumfries. From Glasgow there is service on the coastal route to Stranraer.

First Bus provides connections between Hawick, Selkirk, and Galashiels and train service at Carlisle, Edinburgh, and Berwick.
