Fodor's Expert Review Abadia do Porto

$ Porto Portuguese Fodor's Choice

The cavernous interior, thick tablecloths, and well-heeled clientele tell you this is not just another tasca, but the food at this backstreet abbey is about as down-home as you can get. Although the decor has a monastic theme, meals here are far from austere, so come hungry to make the most of the huge servings of cabrito assado (roast kid), rancho (mixed grill), bacalhau à Gomes Sá (codfish with onions, potato, egg, and olives), and Porto tripas—tripe with beans, chouriço, and vegetables. It's all great value if you share a dish between two or even three people. The chocolate-flavor pão-de-ló sponge cake is divine, too.
