A bustling market town on the banks of the Rio Cávado, Barcelos is the center of a flourishing handicrafts industry, particularly ceramics (above all in the form of the famous Barcelos rooster). The best time to visit is during the famous weekly market—Barcelos is an easy day trip from Braga or Viana do Castelo, and there’s not so much to do or see on other days, although the Museu de Olaria (Pottery Museum) is always worth visiting.
