27 Best Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal

Background Illustration for Hotels

Lisbon has an excellent range of accommodations serving just about every market niche, from luxury pads in the historic downtown to workaday, business-oriented hotels in the modern Parque das Nações. Even in the city's hotels, consider inspecting a room before taking it: street noise can be a problem, and, conversely, quieter rooms at the back don't always have great views (or, indeed, any views). Also, some hotels charge the same rate for each of their rooms, so by checking out a couple you might be able to get a better room for the same price. This is especially true of the older hotels and inns, where no two rooms are exactly alike.

Lisbon is busy year-round, so it's best to secure a room in advance of your trip. Peak periods are Easter and June through September; budget pensões are particularly busy in summer. Despite the high year-round occupancy, substantial discounts—sometimes 30%–40%—abound from November through February.

Altis Avenida Hotel

$$$$ | Rua 1° de Dezembro 120, Lisbon, 1200-360, Portugal Fodor's Choice

Urban explorers will love this vibrant design-led boutique hotel, which opened in 2021 on a charming Chiado side street. Verride Palácio Santa Catarina

$$$$ | Rua de Santa Catarina 1, Lisbon, 1200-401, Portugal

It's hard to imagine a more stunning location in Lisbon for a hotel, and the interior of this painstakingly refurbished hilltop mansion isn't too shabby, either. Rooms are ultra-comfy and tasteful, dotted with artworks; while space is at a premium in some, all look out onto the river or the historic Bica neighborhood. The King's and Queen's suites are certainly the city's most regal, with their respective decors of carved oak panels and tiles and white stucco; others, like the Premium and Salavisa suites—the latter named after Portugal's leading dance director, who lived here for several years, and some of whose books and art remain in situ—are really luxury apartments. Breakfast (available until midday, or in your room 24 hours) is tailor-made: from an eggs-and-bacon fry up to house-made waffles, cakes and biscuits, and juices made to order. In the Lisbon Club 55 gastrobar, opened in 2024, cocktails and bubbly combine well with the sophisticated petiscos devised by chef Fábio Alves, who also oversees the fine Portuguese cuisine served in the upstairs restaurant Suba and the rooftop bar, with its 360-degree views.

Pros

  • Beautiful and unique decor
  • Central location with amazing views
  • Highly attentive staff

Cons

  • Children ages eight and up only
  • No pool, spa, or gym
