2 Best Hotels in Geiranger, The Western Fjords

Background Illustration for Hotels

Geiranger's setting on the breathtaking Geirangerfjord pretty much dictates any hotel's major theme: views, views, and more views. Set up high on the cliffside, both of the village's major hotels deliver on that front, with balconies to boot. The rest is up to you: big with an international flavor (bars, pools, Jacuzzi, and spa) or just the nice, comfortable essentials.

Grande Fjord Hotel

$$$$ | Ørnevegen 200, Geiranger, 6216, Norway

The hotel's majestic setting on the cliffs overlooking the Geiranger fjord assures stunning views from almost every room. Although the building is prosaic and the rooms a bit dated, the hotel, though not luxury by any standard, is a good value, with comfortable, spacious rooms and bright, pleasant common areas. A new building was added in 2024 that features two suites of over 645 square feet, each with a private balcony. There's also a decent in-hotel restaurant.

Pros

  • Good hiking on the grounds
  • Free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate
  • Sundeck and Jacuzzis

Cons

  • Sporadic Wi-Fi
  • It's a trek up to the hotel
  • Not all rooms face the fjord

Hotel Union Geiranger

$$$$ | Geirangervegen 101, Geiranger, 6216, Norway

The largest hotel in the area, Hotel Union is Geiranger's closest thing to a luxury hotel. It sits directly on the cliffside with unobstructed views of the extraordinary Geirangerfjord, so be sure to ask for a room with a balcony. The accommodations are spacious and comfortable, with all the modern conveniences. The spa is pricey but worth the splurge, and the outdoor whirlpool tub and two pools are a big plus for families. The dining room serves three meals, and snacks are available all day long, as are complimentary coffee and tea.

Pros

  • Excellent buffet breakfast
  • Fun classic car museum
  • Free parking

Cons

  • Pool can get crowded in summer
  • Dining room can get uncomfortably packed
  • Some rooms are a bit dated
