3 Best Hotels in Amsterdam-Oost, Amsterdam

Background Illustration for Hotels

The quiet area in Amsterdam's eastern region may be slightly removed from the center, but visitors staying here can get a sense of the real city by mingling with the locals at the many cafés and bars. As an added bonus, hotels here are situated in interesting historical buildings with plenty of space and loads of charm.

Hotel Arena

$$$ | 's-Gravesandestraat 55, 1092 AA, Netherlands Fodor's Choice

Located inside Oosterpark, this former 19th-century orphanage is an open, accessible space, which seamlessly merges the landmark’s historic character with contemporary glass, greenery, and gentle earthy hues to suit its surroundings. Following the original architect’s uncompleted floor plans, there’s a new wing with 16 spacious rooms, a park-facing restaurant, and meeting spaces. Events and cultural activities in the restored historic chapel make it an ideal meeting place for creatives.

Pros

  • Stylish interiors and peaceful views
  • A brilliant boutique-style option that offers value for money
  • Near enough to everything but without those crushing crowds

Cons

  • No connecting rooms or triple/quad rooms
  • Not a central location
  • No gym but there is a tennis court

Volkshotel

$ | Wibautstraat 150, 1091 GR, Netherlands Fodor's Choice

An urban industrial look permeates this hip hotel in the former Volkskrant newspaper plant, which has been completely transformed into an affordable space to stay, work, drink, dance, do yoga, and even get your hair cut. The rooms are cool but basic, with a mod red-black-and-gray color scheme, and sleep up to four; nine of them are “special rooms” designed by artists-in-residence—like the wacky “White Bike Room,” where you sleep in a big bakfiets (a Dutch bicycle cart) in a room decorated with bikes, and two white bicycles are included in the price of your room. You'll find creative types on their computers in the large workspace off the lobby, chatting over drinks in the adjacent bar or unwinding in the seventh-floor restaurant, club, and terrace with panoramic city views.

Pros

  • Many rooms offer sweeping city views
  • Rooms come with free bikes
  • Very affordable for an Amsterdam hotel

Cons

  • Slightly removed from traditional Amsterdam sights
  • Lacks some amenities like minibars, coffee/tea facilities, and phones
  • Young party scene won't suit everyone

Hotel Jansen Bajeskwartier

$ | Bijdorpplantsoen 10, 1096 DC, Netherlands

On the site of a former penitentiary in one of Amsterdam's newest neighborhoods, Bajeskwartier, is a new "home-hotel hybrid" that offers stays from one day to six months---it's a good option for those looking to combine the community-feel of a hostel with the privacy of a hotel. Rooms exude an industrial-chic vibe but are fairly basic, with a subdued color scheme. Concrete walls recycled from the demolished prison cells are adorned with arty prints of Amsterdam's modern landmarks. All rooms have a comfy queen size bed, a kettle and coffeemaker, a small fridge, a work area, and a private en suite bathroom with a rain shower and luxurious Marie-Stella-Maris bathroom amenities. Guests have access to communal kitchens and fully equipped pay-per-use laundry facilities and there's a large café off the lobby.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly
  • Affordable option near center
  • Free, fast, secure Wi-Fi throughout the hotel

Cons

  • Slightly out-of-the-way location
  • Situated in a developing area that is still under construction
  • No room service
