At this budget hotel in Amsterdam’s Museum District, etchings hang on the walls, much of the furniture is antique, and the Rijksmuseum looms just outside the windows.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel is on the top floors of the building, and guests must climb a narrow and very steep stairway to the reception desk and the rooms−the owner highly recommends traveling light.
Functionally furnished with vintage pieces (not in a hip way, mind you) the small rooms look dated, but they come equipped with modern box-spring beds and free WiFi.
Most guest rooms have shared bathrooms with original Art Nouveau tiles on the same floor, while others have a private shower and toilet or simply a washbasin.
Free continental breakfast is served in the cozy breakfast room/lounge, which is filled with Delft blue tiles and antique collectibles.
Breezed through your vacation read already? Exchange it for another book in the small library, where you’ll also find vintage board games.
No bar. But there is coffee/tea in the library.
Located in a quiet, safe upscale neighborhood next to the Big Three museums, this hotel offers good access to Oud Zuid, the Canal Belt and the west side on foot. Tram access is available on the street opposite the hotel.
Sustainable seafood specialist The Seafood Bar (6-minute walk) offers smoked fish varieties from Volendam, delicately-battered fish and chips, four varieties of oyster and extravagant platters of fruits de mer. Soak up some authentic Art Deco atmosphere at Café Americain (7-minute walk) while tucking into “accessible brasserie classics with a twist”. Or why not try a twenty-tens take on Dutch cuisine at Restaurant Floreyn (11-minute walk)?
If you’re looking for the convivial atmosphere of a typical Dutch “brown café”, there’s Café De Wetering (7-minute walk). Popular café Gollem’s Proeflokaal, a dark and "gezellige" Belgian beer café with more than 180 bottled brews and 22 on tap, is a 12-minute walk away.
