41 Best Hotels in Luxembourg

Background Illustration for Hotels

Hotels in Luxembourg are tidy and straightforward, rarely reaching the peaks of luxury, but equally rarely representing tremendous bargains. Most hotels in Luxembourg City are relatively modern and vary from the international style, mainly near the airport, to family-run establishments in town. Many of these, often filled with business travelers on weekdays, offer reduced rates on weekends. Outside the capital, hotels are often in picturesque buildings, and the rates can be considerably lower than in the city.

THE BEST HOTEL IN LUXEMBOURG

Hôtel Le Royal

$$$ | Bd. Royal 12, Luxembourg City, 2449, Luxembourg

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

There’s no grander stay in the city. Where many central hotels are limited by their cramped historic settings, Le Royal was built in the 1980s and spared little expense. The slick, neon-lit piano bar is popular with the business set, who spill in from the boulevard Royal; Amélys is one of the best French restaurants in town (with a gourmet prix-fixe menu); and the spa, sauna, pool, and hammam offer five-star service. Rooms and suites are no less decadent. Privacy-glass windows (darkened at the flick of a switch) separate bathrooms in the larger rooms, where Japanese-style heated toilet seats are an unexpected delight.

Pros

  • Complimentary shuttle bus to the town and airport
  • The breakfast spread befits the grand setting
  • Excellent wellness facilities

Cons

  • The hotel lies on a busy main road
  • One of the more expensive stays in the city
  • It's not as historical as stays in the old town

Escher Bamhaiser

$ | Gaalgebierg 64, Esch-sur-Alzette, 4142, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

This trio of duplex tree houses (for four or six people) on the edge of the deer park, high in the Gaalgebierg area, is simply one of the best stays in Luxembourg. A litany of walking trails stream past its doors, and there's an excellent café where breakfast is served. Bizarrely, this is actually a regional government project, with future plans for more tree houses to be built. Inside, they've been rustically furnished, with magnificent terraces gazing over the park below. All the mod-cons are there; there's even private parking for each.

Pros

  • The café serves good food if you don't want to head elsewhere
  • Great views from the private terraces
  • There's no other sleep quite like it in Luxembourg

Cons

  • The sound of the animals can be quite noisy
  • Breakfast is extra, €6 or €15 depending on the selection
  • It's a bit of a walk into town

Hôtel de L'Ecluse

$ | Waistrooss 29, Wormeldange, 5450, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

This family-run hotel holds more than a few surprises, including a huge green space to its rear complete with outdoor pool (closed in winter), golf putting green, and views over the neighboring vineyard. The covered terrace restaurant and bar offer wine tastings, and there's even a sauna and gym area to work off all that booze. The rooms upstairs are quiet and comfortable and come with balconies. Be sure to try and get one to the rear, which overlooks the garden.

Pros

  • It's really good value
  • A peaceful stay
  • Free covered parking area

Cons

  • You're not near any of the better-equipped towns or villages
  • You really need a car to get here
  • The front is on a rather busy road

Recommended Fodor's Video

Hotel-Restaurant Domaine La Forêt

$$ | Rte. de l'Europe 36, Remich, 5531, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

Given the sheer volume of petrol stations lining the road to this excellent restaurant and spa-hotel, you'd be forgiven for turning around---but that would be a mistake, because the hotel itself is actually rather pretty, wrapped by a seasonal garden. And while the river view is slightly obscured, the bright windows and handsome furniture douse any disappointment. The restaurant is especially well regarded for its French cuisine and is arguably the best in town with a well-stocked cellar to boot. Its spacious rooms (five with a balcony) and spa make half-board stays an appealing prospect.

Pros

  • There's a pretty garden to relax in
  • The restaurant is worth booking even if you're not staying
  • The spa is far better than at most gastro-stays and only open to guests

Cons

  • The road leading up to it is one of the ugliest in Luxembourg
  • It's a pretty steep walk up from the riverbank
  • It's one of the pricier stays in the area

La Pipistrelle B&B

$$$ | Montée du Grund 26, Luxembourg City, 1645, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

This historic B&B of just four rooms lies on the fringes of the UNESCO-listed Grund district, next to Café des Artistes and only a steep, five-minute walk up to the city (or just take the handy elevator). Inside, it’s rather special. An 18th-century facade integrates the outcrop the city is built on, its exposed rock lining the interior of the building and some of the rooms. The subtle restoration has tried to keep as much of this as possible, and the interior is a wonderful lesson in pared-back design: pale wooden floors, unobtrusive designer flourishes, and rooms accented with antiques create a suitably contemplative atmosphere. A truly unique stay.

Pros

  • Great setting on the edge of the Grund
  • It’s living history
  • You’ve got a wealth of drinking and dining close by

Cons

  • There’s no elevator or disabled access to rooms and the staircase is narrow
  • No parking
  • It’s a B&B, so there are few facilities

Le Place d'Armes

$$$ | Pl. d'Armes 18, Luxembourg City, 1136, Luxembourg Fodor's Choice

This renovated 18th-century building was formerly seven separate properties, and if you’re lucky enough to bag a stay in the eaves, you’ll find original wooden beams latticed between the walls and angled roof, with mirrored window nooks carved between them gazing out over the inner courtyard and square. Distressed paintwork and golden headboards complete the effect, eliciting a fairytale air. Downstairs, the overall aura of moneyed elegance continues with the Michelin-starred La Cristallerie restaurant, its stained-glass windows and acclaimed wine cellar backing up one of the better menus in town. Lunch in Café de Paris is far more laid-back, though the wine selection is still a serious beast.

Pros

  • You’re in the shopping heart of the city
  • Very friendly staff
  • The rooms really are something special

Cons

  • No pool or wellness facilities
  • The square outside can be noisy for overlooking rooms
  • Decor is quite tired in areas

Au Vieux Moulin

$$ | Maison 158,, Asselborn, L9940, Luxembourg

Rustic and romantic, this elegantly simple oasis is hidden away on a dirt road, along a bubbling brook on the site of an 11th-century mill. Remnants of the old stone structure have been incorporated into the inn, which opened in 1985. Upstairs, the rooms are warm and inviting, with wood-beam ceilings, and large bathrooms have tiled showers. The downstairs is devoted to a handsome bar and restaurant. The menu offers inventive French-influenced cuisine such as rabbit with sesame seeds, port sauce, and vegetable tempura. Dining on the patio along the stream is a pleasure in warmer months. Between meals, take a long bike ride or hike (trail maps and bicycles are available through the front desk) or visit the on-site exhibit of old mill equipment.

Grand Hotel Cravat

$$ | Bd. F.D. Roosevelt 29, Luxembourg City, 2450, Luxembourg

This hotel has been in the Cravat family for over a century, battling modernity every step of the way—the phrase “grande dame” was coined for places like this. Now run by fourth-generation Carlo, he has endeavored to keep it exactly as it was in his grandfather’s day. It would have been so easy to replace everything; instead, decades-old chairs are carefully reupholstered in the same style, wooden elevators from the 1940s are lovingly maintained, and lock-and-key rooms (there’s no electronic cards here) ooze old-fashioned allure. Such attention to detail is to be admired.

Pros

  • It’s a living, breathing slice of old Luxembourg
  • Even the bar is like stepping back into the 1950s
  • The elevators are works of art

Cons

  • Rooms can be rather basic
  • There’s a fine line between vintage and dated
  • There are few modern facilities, so there's not much luxury for the price

Heintz

$ | Grand'Rue 55, Vianden, L9410, Luxembourg

Expanded from its origins as a Trinitarian monastery, this atmospheric hotel has been in the family for four generations. During the war, owner Grandma Hansen worked with the Resistance, hiding hams, cash, and Luxembourgers with equal aplomb. The public spaces are rich with history, from the cross-vaulted oak café to the hallways filled with local antiques; rooms are simple and up-to-date. The oldest rooms, on the first floor, have antique oak furniture and original doors, but baths are down the hall; the best rooms are upstairs, with balconies over the garden and fountain. The restaurant offers French classics—grilled beef with béarnaise sauce, salmon in chives—and authentic German apple strudel with vanilla sauce.

Hostellerie Du Grünewald

This century-old gem in Luxembourg City’s Dommeldange district offers a stylish base. With 36 designer rooms spread across three buildings (one with elevator access), it blends traditional Luxembourgish heritage with modern flair. Hôtel Bel-Air

$ | Rte. de Berdorf 1, Echternach, 6409, Luxembourg

Perched on a hilltop overlooking expansive gardens, this grand hotel dates back to 1927. It's not far from a nearby golf course and the clientele tend to be sporting weekenders. An on-site haute cuisine restaurant makes the most of the views from the terrace, and throws in a few Luxembourgish standards. The wellness area includes a large outdoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and hammam.

Pros

  • You can rent bikes and e-bikes from reception
  • Great wellness facilities

Hôtel de la Sûre

$ | Rue du Pont 1, Esch-sur-Sûre, 9650, Luxembourg

There aren't a lot of options this far out west, but this sprawling hotel is an assured presence. It's also oddly ambitious. A gym and wellness center is just one of the many perks—its restaurant Comte Godfroy offers the best meal in town, plus the hotel can help with a range of activities, from kayak and bike rental to motorbike tours, and lake diving. Rooms are spread across town and range from basic stays to self-catering studios. There really isn't a lot they don't do.

Pros

Cons

Hôtel Français

$$ | Pl. d'Armes 14, Luxembourg City, 1136, Luxembourg

Set in an enviable location in the city, on the historic place d’Armes, this small, smart boutique stay offers decent value for its prestigious setting. The same owners also run the larger, more modern “gallery hotel” Simoncini, near Place Guillaume, though this is the better placed of the two. Rooms sit above the excellent 19th-century Café Français, one of the oldest eateries in Luxembourg, and a fine spot to savor a light lunch while gazing on a square once dubbed “the living room of the city.” Rooms upstairs are more frugal and business-like in their design than the artwork scattering the public spaces, but it's a great base for shoppers.

Pros

  • Sumptuous café-restaurant
  • Within walking distance to major sights
  • Family-owned stay with lots of character and history

Cons

  • There's no parking in this part of the city

Hôtel Vauban

$$ | Pl. Guillaume II 10, Luxembourg City, 1648, Luxembourg

A decent-value city-center stay on the bustling, likable place Guillaume II. The square, known locally as Knuedler (named after the knot worn by the Franciscan monks who once had an abbey here) is home to the town hall and weekly markets (Wednesday and Saturday). It’s a charming location and one for which this hotel’s neat, unfussy rooms make a fine base. The owners run a pair of restaurants on either side of the hotel that are worth your attention, especially the seafood-heavy Brasserie Guillaume.

Pros

  • Quiet efficiency and a good location in the city
  • The dining options downstairs are brilliant
  • Breakfasts are impressive and can be taken on the terrace

Cons

  • There's little remarkable about the basic rooms
  • It has the feel of a business stay—brisk and useful

There are great views of the river, a restaurant that serves both French and Italian food, a playground for kids, a huge terrace area, parking, and the rooms are neat and modern. Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel

$$$$ | Grand-Rue 9, Clervaux, 9710, Luxembourg

This is actually two hotels, which have been attached via a walkway—the older of the two is the 90-room Koener, complete with a pair of restaurants (steak house and French), a large wellness center, and cocktail bar—but guests at the 22-suite Le Clervaux opposite also share these facilities for free, so there's little excuse not to opt for this one, which is slightly more interesting. Rooms are heavy on design, with Art Deco--style suites merging original timber framing and accented wallpaper. Large windows also offer some excellent views of the castle.

Pros

  • You're right in the very center of Clervaux
  • The Rhino sports bar is a fun place to hang out
  • Access to a small gym and great wellness facilities

Cons

  • It's the priciest stay here (the Koener is half the price)
