Fodor's Expert Review El Sbarlefo
The odd name is Venetian for "smirk," although you'll be hard-pressed to find one at this cheery, familiar bacaro with a wine selection as ample as the cicheti on offer. Making the most of limited space, the owners have installed counters and stools inside, tables outside, and external banco access for subsequent rounds—and order you will, selecting from a spread of delectables ranging from classic polpette of meat and tuna to tomino cheese rounds to speck and robiola rolls. The selection of wines is equally intriguing—ask for a recommendation, and you're likely to make a new discovery. El Sbarlefo has a second location in Dorsoduro, in the calle just behind the church of San Pantalon.
